I was listening to the “Money Box” broadcast on Radio 4 – 05/03/2022.

The boss of “Ecotricity” was interviewed due to a complaint received from a customer. What was more interesting was what he went onto say about all the vast increases in price.

Listen to what he has to say from 22:08 minutes into the programme.

He seems to think we have all been “shafted” by the oil/gas companies:

I’ve long been of the opinion that the oil companies – BP, Exxon, Shell, Total etc – whilst being ostensibly individual companies in ‘competiton’ are actually a de facto monopoly; that is, they operate as a cartel or – perhaps a little more darkly – as a cabal

    A ‘free market’ it ain’t

I don’t doubt that for a second Drone.

Also ‘energy companies’ are simply middlemen. It all comes from the same place. How else did my lights stay on when my ‘supplier’ went bust? What is the point of them all other than to add layers of bureaucracy and cream off money for shareholders? Competition my arse, the ones who offered lower prices went down the pan and are now being paid for by everybody.

The increase in standing charge is ridiculous too, mine will more than double in a month. However much electricity you save you can do nothing about the SC, it’s regressive.

Yep I got my letter today from our supplier saying that our billl would go
up by 54% from 1st April. Drone has already got to the crux of the matter,
    “a free market it aint”

I just looked at the new standing charge with disbelief – it’s a charge for access to a supply whether you use the supply or not.

I thought it was energy in scarce supply, not access to it.

    Energy shortage, not access shortage.

I wonder what the bill would be if you used literally zero gas and electricity one month?

They would be kicking your door in to see if you were bypassing your meters!

I have had the occasional Morrisons Data visit during the summer months.

They leave disappointed – I really do consume little energy outside the depths of winter.

Apparently, the guidance for a ‘healthy’ room temperature is that it should be between 18C(64F) and 22C(72F). I find the minimum to be quite warm enough during the winter months and the upper to be stifling

Thermal vest under sweatshirt, under shirt, under pullover; long-johns under trousers; and two pairs of wool socks is the garb from November until April, frequently with the addition of a dressing gown in the evenings; though I do draw the line at wearing fingerless mitts indoors :-)

Not a pretty sight, but it saves on the lecky and gas which are currently set at a monthly direct debit of £72 and £8 per month respectively, though will no doubt double over the ensuing months

Ultimately, it will be the thermal vest that brings down Putin – who needs Russian energy?

Buy shares in Damart would be my advice

I do like the way the Ukrainian refugees are so well rugged-up against the cold, particularly the children who look so sweetly roly-poly in their heavy coats and bobble hats

This crisis is further proof that the insane Net Zero by 2050 policy must be abandoned. And also shows up the sheer folly of destroying coal fired power stations rather than mothballing them.

Quite right, CAS. I mean, who needs to save the planet for future generations when we’re all going to die in a nuclear holocaust next month anyway.

The planet is not going to end from global warming in 2050. And if we pursue this insane agenda, future generations are going to have no quality of life anyway.

The idea we can power the country with wind farms and solar panels is ludicrous. And very easy to say by generations who have enjoyed all the benefits of a wealthy, industrialised society but seek to deny it to others.

I think future generations should be in a position to choose for themselves whether or not they complete the trashing of the planet.

We enjoyed it because we didn’t actually realise the damage we were causing. So it’s up to us to do our bit in trying to reverse it.

OK, you can go and tell all the people in the developing world they cannot have the same standard of living the western world has had. For their own good, of course.

I wonder what sort of reception you will get?
