March 23, 2006 at 08:54 #70527Certainty to lay at evens
March 23, 2006 at 08:55 #70528Drawn 1 is a very bad draw Simon Crisford was on atr yesterday and though the draw would be the downfall.
March 23, 2006 at 10:25 #70530Intresting this is raised because I don’t think it is a certainty at all. Terrible draw and very short on the back of its last victory against poor opposition. Look at Kane Hekili’s form. It is a machine on dirt and will be carrying my money on Saturday.
March 23, 2006 at 11:25 #70532Got a tip for Choctaw nation. Was told he would be staying on anyway.
Whats the sand in Nad al sheeba like compared to where the breeders cup was held for example? Is it deeper.

March 23, 2006 at 11:55 #70533Would go with a Kane Hekili, Super Frolic/Brass Hat/Electrocutionist, KH is the one horse in the race who I’d say is "world class" on dirt whereas the other’s are high class horses i think they lack his ability.
March 23, 2006 at 13:04 #70534get on the Jap each-way at 5/1 before it dries up.
March 23, 2006 at 19:59 #70536I just cant believe the price of Kane Heliki…….. when i first saw the decs for the race, i thought they would go about 6/4 each of two.
I may be reading it all wrong, but i cant see Kane Heliki getting beat.
and that isnt even my nap of world cup night – Heart Alone in the sprint looks like a penalty kick for me.
March 23, 2006 at 20:12 #70538Stormont do you have a username on Betfair? Its just I remember someone saying the same thing as you and that Hearts Cry beat this years future arc winner and till that race unbeaten Deep Impact so is a shoo-in. Totally agree anyway.
March 23, 2006 at 20:24 #70540You seen Deep Impacts return last weekend FSL? – poetry in motion.
March 23, 2006 at 20:35 #70541Yes Irish very impressive stepped up in distance.
March 23, 2006 at 21:20 #70542Was a cakewalk and Hurricane Run will have to have improved over the winter to match him.
Do you know if Cesario is due back this year by any chance?
March 23, 2006 at 21:50 #70543Haven’t heard anything no.
March 24, 2006 at 00:17 #70544Damn, didn’t know Deep Impact had made reappearance. Do you have any links at all??
I don’t think Elec is a certainty, although the field doesn’t look up to scratch. Kane Heliki will also have my money, although it’s a possibility that he will be produced too late, like has happened in a couple of his races, and also the draw 1 means nothing. Singspiel won out of draw 2 in 1997, and no horse had won the Arc out of draw 6 before, which was Hurricane Run’s draw last year.
But Kane Heliki should win i think.
March 24, 2006 at 01:01 #70545jackane I’ve looked but I can’t find the link. Here’s a consolation story about Silent Witness instead
"Wednesday, 22 March 2006: An intriguing field will contest the 129th running of the Hong Kong Derby at Shatin on Sunday but the classic will take second place to the public expectations for champion sprinter Silent Witness
The dual Horse of the Year will attempt to bounce back from a disappointing seventh in the Centenary Sprint Cup – his first-ever defeat at a sprint distance – in Sunday’s Chairman’s Sprint Prize.
Trainer Tony Cruz says Silent Witness is back on his game and has improved but he will need to show old spark or his racing future will be in doubt.
The horse to beat in the Derby is Viva Pataca, owned by Macau casino king Stanley Ho.
Trained by John Moore, Viva Pataca became the early Derby favourite on the strength of back-to-back wins over 1600 metres at Shatin.
He had useful form in England before coming to HK but is untested over the Derby trip of 2000 metres,
Last start he destroyed his opposition when coming from midfield and going to the outside fence before racing away to win easily by over three lengths.
Stanley Ho has chartered a private jet to ensure his jockey Christophe Soumillon makes back to Hong Kong from Dubai in time to ride Viva Pataca in the Derby.
Hello Pretty earned his place in the line-up with an impressive win in the Derby Trial over 1800 metres.
Hello Pretty raced in Australia as Distorted Halo and was fifth in the Bill Stutt Stakes at Moonee Valley behind Mr Martini.
He has improved since his transfer to Hong Kong is expected to settle on the pace.
His trainer Francis Lui has no doubts he’ll get the extra distance and he holds the the highest rating in the field at 106.
Happee Owner, one of three horses in the race prepared by Tony Cruz, was the winner of both the Wellington and New Zealand Guineas as Ambitious Owner before arriving in Hong Kong.
He also finished third in the Classic Mile and fifth in the Derby Trial.
Sunny Sing, another from the John Moore yard, turned in a big effort to win the Classic Mile and backed up with a second placing behind Hello Pretty in the Derby Trial.
Though untested over 2000 metres, he is a genuine chance off a rating of 104.
Silver Sun, trained by Dennis Yip, was a disappointing eighth in the Derby Trial having previously shown good form over the metric mile but his ability to get the Derby trip remains in question.
Hail The Storm gives trainer Casper Fownes’ the chnace to follow in the footsteps of his father Lawrie who won the 1994 Derby with Super Fit.
Hail The Storm finished second in the Classic Mile and fourth in the Derby Trial.
Super Fit was owned by Stanley Ho Sau Nan who will be represented this year by Very Fit, a half brother to champion sprinter Silent Witness..
Anothjer trained by Tony Cruz, Very Fit finished sixth in the Classic Mile before setting the pace and finishing a game third behind Hello Pretty in the Derby Trial. Paul O’Sullivan’s second runner Good Nature was a game third behind Viva Pataca over 1600 metres and sixth in the Derby Trial.
The trainer maintains he is still improving.
Great Achievement and Good Ba Ba, trained respectively by Manfred Man and Wong Yu On, will be attempting to make history by becoming the first Hong Kong International Sale graduate to win the Derby.
Cruz’s third runner Willie Detroy was the talk of the town even before he arrived in HK last year from New Zealand.
Willie Detroy raced in Australia and New Zealand as Cheval De Troy and Felix Coetzee has chosen to ride him instead of stablemates Happy Owner and Very Fit.
The winner of the Bonecrusher Stakes and fourth in the NZ Derby, he was installed the early Derby favourite when he won over 1800 metres first up in Hong Kong but blotted his record book slightly when fifth in the Classic Mile.
However, it was later found he had a bone chip in his leg which has since been removed.
The Paul O’Sullivan-trained Matiri King has a rating of only 75 but before arriving in Hong Kong finished third in the Avondale Guineas over 2000 metres at Ellerslie in New Zealand.
Former South African Brilliant One, trained by Tony Millard, has been well beaten in both his Hong Kong outings but his overseas form includes a fourth in the Cape of Good Hope Derby over 2000 metres."
March 24, 2006 at 01:45 #70546on the subject of Deep Impact.
You can get a video replay of the race from here:
http://japanracing.jp/information/list2006.html
the race was the Hanshin Daishoten
