Weights not out yet but two I fancy at this early stage are Our Island and Relax, both dour stayers and soft ground revellers. Hope it doesn’t turn out to be a farce like a couple of years ago, the north east hasn’t been hardest hit so may be OK.

Their was some promise in Portrait King’s run last time out not sure if they’d send him over again but he won the previous renewal in 2012. I’d give him a chance if they send him for this.

I’ve been following Smoking Aces for years; can’t give up now [even though he’s not as good as I thought he might be, he’s still bred to win a race like this]. Oh, and it might be interesting if Dr Newland gets Sam TD to ride for him again for this race.

Arguably the best judge of value punting just now, Paul Moulton, has just tweeted this:

With 4 places ante post 16s Safran de Cotte & 12s Samstown may look great value if Saturday’s Eider cuts up (and if they actually run) #risk

Paul very rarely tweets at all, let alone with ‘tips’.

I like the look of the profile of Tarquinius, and to a slightly lesser extent, Wood Yer of Twiston-Davies. Fabulous breeding, out of Large Action. She won three Grd 1s, 5 Grd 2s, a Gd 3, and odds and sods.

Sun Cloud looks a real equine Marathon runner and although the trainer feels he’s gone further up the weights than he really should have, he should be involved with a clear round. 7/1 seems fair enough but I’ll wait for Cheltenham and hopefully some ground that doesn’t resemble Somerset Levels.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Ballypatrick was staying on at Cheltenham over 3m3f in terrible conditions at Cheltenham last time. Might be good for a place at 14’s.

I think this is Sun Cloud’s to lose, though. Brian Hughes rides the course very well, the horse has improved every race over fences

If the blinkers make Swatow Typhoon focus and cut out a few errors, he’s well in. Recorded a couple of good RPR’s this season and when you think he’s been dropped several pounds since finishing 4 lengths behind Mendip Express, who’s now about a stone higher…

Taking another chance on Smoking Aces. Has been running encouraging races and this kind of test should suit him to the ground. Couple pounds off his back won’t hurt either.

I’ve just been looking at Swatow Typhoon; sounds like a horse that will stay forever and he’s had experience of the track. I bet Brian Harding rides the track really well also. Got to back him ew even if it means deserting Smoking Aces.

I’m in your camp on this one MO. He undoubtedly is a bit of a rascal, but has talent when he puts his mind to it. I’m hoping the first time blinkers will do the trick, you’re going to know your fate pretty soon with him, I think he either wins or runs an absolute stinker, nothing inbetween.

Have backed Chavoy as well. It’s a sh*t or bu*t race for me :) could make a case for most of them really. Haven’t had a bet for ages so I’m quite excited!

Ballypatrick ran quite strangely up the straight. Head went very low at times, almost grazing the grass as he ran.

He did, didn’t he. Reminded me of some of the old stayers of the past that used to do that but they would do it throughout the race; I was worried that he was going to have a heart attack or something for a while but then he lifted his head again. It was very odd.

Comply Or Die sometimes had a low head carriage. As did one of Jonjo’s donkeys that AP used thrash round racecourses during the summer months c2005. Think it began with D, changed stables late in his career.

Day Du Roy ! That was the nag’s name.

Not as low as Ballypatrick today though

See More Business was another with a characteristically low head carriage. I thought he was dropping his head to the whip tbh. He seemed to run on well after the last. It was unusual for an Eider to have the distances relatively small.

I did Safran de Cotte fwiw.
