My Gold Cup fancy Corach Rambler takes his chance here, along with one of the big guns from the Sandy Thomson yard, in Empire Steel (who’s got great record around here), and every bit of me wants to back one of them.

It’s Elvis Mail however, who catches my eye here. Think he’s got a decent chance off his revised mark, and he’s another who’s got from here. Won first time out last season too. I bet him when an outsider in The Coral Cup, but it was short lived for him.

Completely depends on the odds, but if he’s underestimated (which isn’t a given), then I’ll give him a go.

Edit, rarely bet at these odds, so I hope there’s no R4

    Elvis Mail 5’s

if rambler is a GC horse then he should be winning this , Sandys horses def look like they are needing there first run , however it is Kelso which is his back garden …

The interesting one to me here is Highland Hunter. Off for nearly 2 years and the only runner on the card for O’Brien and Paddy Brennan.

2nd in the Welsh national won by iwilldoit off 140 (now rated 153) in 2021 when this horse was still with Nicholls.

I don’t have the stats for it but in my minds eye I don’t see many runners at Kelso from the O’ Brien yard and I genuinely don’t recall the last time I saw Brennan make the trek up there.

At 15/2 he’s worth a roll of the dice.

Corach Rambler certaintly wasn’t at his best at start of the previous seasons. I’ll go for Empire Steel. This trip, course and ground should suit him perfectly.

    Empire Steel 3/1

I’ve missed the boat on Empire Steel, but I do think he’ll win this.

I won’t be reading too much into Corach Rambler’s run here. Simply not one to catch first time out.

This is really strange placing for the rambler unless he’s just here for a pipe opener

Il be confused if he wins

As they still won’t know if he’s a gold cup horse as he didn’t do it in graded company and he’ll have blown his national mark

Just nice to see a Grand National winner coming back the next season and starting out running in a chase rather than going the hurdle route.

Didn’t expect him to win the race but you have to be rather underwhelmed by that ‘performance’

Maybe connections were keen to have a run in Scotland; there can’t be that many opportunities.

I wouldn’t be overly concerned by today’s performance.

Early days for him with regards to targets and lets not forget that 4 of his 7 career wins have come in the spring.

Well done Bobby. I like Elvis Mail a lot. He’s one that could go well in a Grand National. As for Corach Rambler, I wonder if he’s becoming a bit of a ‘character’? He has that unusual head carriage – sometime high, sometimes normal, going high in a finish when hitting the front … and maybe he spat the dummy a wee bit today. He seems to thoroughly enjoy himself in big fields. Whether that has anything to do with it I don’t know. When asked for an effort four out he found zero – didn’t even make up a length. And he hit the last 3, with a notable error two out.

The Ultima and The National are made for him, and I think he’d go superbly well in a soft ground Hennessy if proper fit (4th last year on good after a poor debut at Carlisle). I just hope she drops her G1 plans for him.

I did not expect Corach Rambler to win today. Perhaps it would have been good to see him run a little bit better but it was not disastrous.

The only false note is Lucinda Russell describing Kelso as “too sharp” for him and then suggesting he may run at Haydock next. I have never heard Kelso described as a sharp track before, whereas the jumps track at Haydock nowadays is certainly on the sharp side. How will that suit him?

They made sure Corach finished, hoping to get a pound or two drop from the handicapper no doubt.

I mean, that must have been the point of the exercise, surely.
