Although I’ve bet against him in The Okd Newton Cup at Haydock today, I do think that La Yakel looks the right type of horse for this.
He’s rather low in the weights for making the line up here, but I’ve bet him at 20-1 anyway, as I still that think that he can make it
July 8, 2023 at 13:36 #1654719I’ve taken the opposite approach Kris. Although I really do like your bet here, I’ve got a very poor record in this race with ap bets, so I’ve just taken him at Haydock. I wish you luck with this one
He’s a non runner now
July 8, 2023 at 15:00 #1654742I’ve decided to have a bet here after all, and I’ve taken 20-1 for Hamish. He always seems to miss this race, and he hasn’t been back to York since his wins in 2019, but I’m hoping that this is the year
July 14, 2023 at 08:24 #1655265Venture to Cognac , seeing the name Wicky Wicky Wheels takes me back , i remember the first Wiki Wiki Wheels , i recall he was named after a Cayman Island Taxi firm . I think i backed him at big Goodwood meeting in early 80s , sure he won but memory hazy . Was the year Soba won , and i definately backed her .
I think a few years later a horse called Miki Miki Motor went round for while .July 14, 2023 at 09:18 #1655273Soba was on a roll that year and I read Richard Baerlein in The Guardian as my father bought the paper.
Baerlein wouldn’t have Soba beat in the Stewards’ Cup and told readers go pile in at 10/1 ante-post.
But she then got beaten (fifth IIRC) at Ayr on her final pre-Goodwood outing, she got a stands side draw (thought impossible to win with back then) and was 18/1 on the day.
Baerlein didn’t care – go in again, she will make all, it doesn’t matter where she’s drawn, she won’t be caught, he wrote, as he napped her.
The rest is history.
My father later wrote an irreverent Baerlein letter to the paper that Baerlein sportingly (if somewhat pompously) reproduced in his column and I met him a few years later when working at the paper myself.
He was the original throwback – totally out of place at that paper even back then.
Good old Soba.

I believe he likened being racing correspondent at “The Guardian” to being an admiral in the Swiss Navy.
Difficult to imagine someone who ate vast quantities of oysters and quaffed copious amounts of champagne being allowed in Guardian Towers now. Or the paper printing someone who advised its readers to “bet like men”.
July 14, 2023 at 09:48 #1655275He wrote that in a column that appeared on a right-hand page and on the left-hand page on the same spread was Polly Toynbee’s women’s column – 18yo me laughed at the time!

Got me hooked and also taught me good lessons to bet only what you can afford to lose , although my stakes are a bit higher 41 years later . Millfontaine was another winner that year i remember backing . Weird really as it was only few pence winnings but good times .
David Chapman a legend , didnt he win that channel 4 trophy plenty times , Chaplins Club and Glencroft would win days in a row when on song and in well .July 25, 2023 at 23:30 #1656543When you almost start a duplicate Ebor thread as you can’t find one, but then remember to check Bobby’s list, see there’s one up, actually look properly and find not only it, but that’s you’ve posted on it!
Anyway….the weights are out.

I won’t have another ap bet now, but I’m looking at Tashkhan and Jackfinbar now. They are both around 20-1 and 25-1
July 27, 2023 at 05:36 #1656678Last 2 years horses OR101 or more have got in so looked at them for this year at this point. Absurde had a number of these behind when 2nd to stablemate Vauban last time at Ascot and wasn’t put into the race until late on from near the back hands and heels for place prizemoney. Scriptwriter, one those behind, ran Hamish close next time to give the Ascot race some merit. There may be still more left in the tank.
Absurde 8-1 ew
July 27, 2023 at 08:37 #1656693I’m very interested in Tashkhan too Kris. Thought he’d be a serious player in the staying division after what he did at 3 but didn’t really go on last season but some signs of life this season and if Ellison has got him anywhere near back he’s very well handicapped off 106 having been rated 10lbs higher at the start of last season. Quite ground dependent though which does temper some enthusiasm antepost.
On a very similar line of thinking you don’t see many Irish Derby runner-ups lining up in a handicap 2 years later, Lone Eagle is quite ground dependent too but I’d think he’ll probably be Frankie’s ride with the link with the owner unless Gosden has something which runs. He also started last season 10lbs higher than his Ebor mark.
July 27, 2023 at 10:24 #1656723Tashkhan ran well just behind Scriptwriter in the Hamish race, who was behind Absurde in the Ascot race.
August 5, 2023 at 14:43 #1658665Added Sweet William 7-1 ew 5 places for now.
August 21, 2023 at 13:44 #1660335Back onto both Euchen Glen and WickyWickyWheels now, and even though both have other entries, which would normally make me very cautious, I’ve just went for it as the odds are just worth it
Edit – Topped up
Euchen Glen EW8Pls/40’s
WickyWickyWheels EW8Pls/180’sAugust 21, 2023 at 22:28 #1660386Try Scampi, folks. By way of RaceShare, I have a tiny share (a breadcrumb) in him and will be at York on Saturday, also striking one off my bucket list. The Ebor falls around my birthday and every year oir the past 50 I’ve been promising myself – ‘I’ll go next year.’
Even without an interest in Scampi I would like his chances. His battling win at Ascot last time (first two well clear) suggests the penny has finally dropped with him (he had looked a touch quirky to me before that). In the past he hasn’t been one for fighting through a wall of horses, and I suspect that issue remains. He’ll need a wide uninterrupted run to be there at the end, but he’s improving and has the help of the ultra confident Saffie Osborne. Have backed him at 25s. Good luck.
August 26, 2023 at 05:30 #1661033Euchen Glen with handbrake up and Scriptwriter with a nice on the eye run are my 2 , love to see Such an run a big one
