2013 Eclipse Champion Steeplechase Horse euthanized after suffering a shoulder fracture in a fall midstretch of the G1 New York Turf Writers’ Cup at Saratoga today. He was 12 years old and had been a regular presence at the Saratoga meet for several years. RIP champ.
August 27, 2015 at 23:48 #1184547Is that the meeting where a horse died after winning a race a couple of years ago?
August 28, 2015 at 06:32 #1184719You’re thinking of Arcadius in the 2012 Iroquois Hurdle, who suffered a heart attack while cooling out after the race. The Iroquois is run in June at Percy Warner in Nashville, Tennessee, which is a one-day jumps meeting.
Saratoga is the last truly “mixed” race meeting in the US – it holds jumps races along with its more famous flat races. Up until the 1980s there used to be a jumps race on every card during the meet, but now they are only on Thursdays. There are always a band of rabble-rousers trying to nix the hurdling because of the perceived danger/cruelty and this incident will only add fuel to that fire unfortunately.
