I read that Eddie Ahern is looking to return to race riding after a ten year ban.
The Snooker player Stephen Lee was banned for twelve years, looking to return next year.
A number of Chinese Snooker players, banned by WSB. Surprisingly the Chinese snooker governing body, extended the bans for PR China competitions on average 25% above the WSB.I know its draconian but, life bans on those found to have deliberately fixed a sporting event would raise the bar and make potential offenders think.
Educate those young riders at the start of their journey before they make that life changing mistake.
Not saying that said jockey should be banned, as there is an investigation that will determine what involvement they had. Ive seen worse..just cant remember where at the moment.
July 9, 2023 at 21:58 #1654921It’ll be interesting to see who if anybody will give Ahern a job , to be fair he’ll be one guy guaranteed not to be on a non trier ….
July 9, 2023 at 22:13 #1654924I am not keen on life bans generally.
If the world is mostly populated by saints, they’re obviously good at giving me the swerve as I’ve never met any of them.
Social media is full of internet lynch mobs – what do they want wrongdoers to do: kill themselves?
Like it or not, murderers seldom serve life terms any more, so calling for people to be given a life ban for many, though not all, activities seems iniquitous to me.

But being part of a regulated profession (such as horseracing) is a privilege not a right. If you’re banned from horseracing there’s nothing stopping you from getting a job doing something else.
Other regulators will dish out permanent bans. For example, a solicitor / doctor / chartered accountant could be permanently struck off by their respective regulator.
July 10, 2023 at 07:39 #1654931Fair comment, Archipenko, but take a lad like Kitts, young, daft, might not know anything else.
I just think in some circumstances a life ban effectively destroys/ends any semblance of quality in their lives and I don’t think that’s a proportional or appropriate punishment in some cases.
Kitts hasn’t murdered anyone and I very much doubt if he’s the main player in all of this.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 10, 2023 at 11:02 #1654936The jockey is not the cause of the issue and a life ban would not solve the problem.
There would not be many trainers or jockeys left in the game if disportionate punishments were dished out. Far from a deterrent it might raise the stakes.
The current set up means it is open to abuse and will continue to be so.
As it is at least we have a notebook horse for about forty days time.
The betting trail would provide the answers as there is always a trail. But privacy and legalities mean those trails are never revealed.July 10, 2023 at 15:44 #1654952You’re right about the trail Sam, as far as I’m aware it is treated
in the same way as a spent conviction. Which means that it is removed
as an offence, or whatever, so his slate is wiped clean. However they
themselves have it on the books should there be a further similar offence
and it would be taken into consideration. As you say, this doesn’t help
the punter much if he is not aware of the previous indiscretion. Maybe
they should have something similar to a Timeform squiggle after his name.
Unlikely I’d have to say.July 14, 2023 at 11:55 #1655288Licence suspended with immediate effect:
No matter how much sympathy you have for this lad, it was his decision to stop a horse in front of a world wide (pay)TV audience. Let’s see what happens to the ones who gave him the instructions.
July 14, 2023 at 12:15 #1655291No real issue with that, BUT, let’s see if the REAL players here are apprehended and dealt with just as strictly.
Suspending Kitts alters nothing – warning off whoever put him up to it is the only thing that will send a message and clean up the game a bit.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 14, 2023 at 12:44 #1655293I’d like to see a Life ban on Jockeys proved to be doing this kind of cheating
That way any jockey would seriously think long and hard about pulling off such a stunt and therefore those REAL players will find it impossible to pull one off
The trouble is there will be grey areas
Also I think the snooker fixers killed a member of the players family when he refused to fix a game back in the 90’s ??
I don’t know how much was played for but I doubt they had the player at 10/1 in running..

July 14, 2023 at 12:55 #1655295The right decision but a competent authority would have done it far earlier.
July 14, 2023 at 13:02 #1655297I think draconian punishments are a must in these type of offenses but you have to ensure the right people are targetted – the people behind the scenes are usually the masterminds behind these type of ‘plots’ and it can lead them to being able to coerce the younger less experienced/naive jockeys into these situations (financial gain is usually the carrot).
In a lot of cases the jockey is simply the easiest target to go after, as they afterall are the ones riding the horse…..I am not sure that a lifetime ban for them is right but it needs to be of a length (say a minimum of 5 years maybe?) that will have a serious impact on them but you also have to bear in mind that once they are tarnished with this brush it will no doubt be extremely hard for them to get rides when they return (in an industry where it is already hard enough to get rides to establish yourself even when you haven’t been found guilty of the non-trier rule).
Maybe the powers that be need to be a bit more proactive in ensuring that every jockey’s changing room at every course has a poster up (maybe near the exit of the room so it is the last thing they see as they go out to ride) in bold words detailing the harsh punishment for being caught riding (or not riding) a non trier.

July 14, 2023 at 13:52 #1655309I see Greg Wood is making many of the same points – and using the same material – I used here at the time.
Except Wood – different class to the rest tbh – has taken it further and interrogated Betfair about it.
Yet another excellent item by easily the best racing journalist there is.

This must be very dirty if someone accepts to be fully excluded from racecourses, stables and all licensed premises and it’s not only Dylan Kitts behind this.
