April 9, 2008 at 21:34 #157187The thing to remember with O’Brien is that, while he does get the cream of the crop these days, he was achieving exceptional results long before he was ever given a sniff of Coolmore. Anyone he has worked for, and those who have worked with/for him would be pretty unanimous that he is an exceptional talent.
There are clearly a number of facets which a great trainer requires to be skilled in. Plenty have good staff and look after them and know how to feed a horse and get it fit. However, for me, the key element to being an exceptional trainer is having a very finely tuned understanding of each individual horses requirements, seeing something in a horse that no one else notices or can distinguish, and I would suggest that very few possess this rare quality.
I’d place Cecil, Stoute, Vincent O’Brien and Andre Fabre along with Aidan O’Brien as the quintet I’d put up as being truly exceptional over the years I’ve followed racing.
I wouldn’t place any of the jumps trainers in the same league, although Nicholls would be an obvious candidate if he carries on the way he has during the last 3 or 4 years. Pipe and Dickinson both had flaws and, while there are plenty other really good trainers in the jumping game, none of them are truly exceptional.
April 9, 2008 at 21:42 #157190No, Kauto was taken out of the Whitbread today and he isn’t in at Punchestown.
The 2 miler @ Sandown would be the only other option but surely they couldn’t could they?
Maybe they’ll wait and see what Lough Derg does in the Scottish Champion Hurdle…
April 10, 2008 at 19:21 #157299no i am not joking it seams he is to run in the betfred at sandown the last meating of the season…!! madness really doin this after same sort of thing ruined azza………….!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 10, 2008 at 19:31 #157302If Kauto Star does run, Nicholls will go from ‘proclaimed genius’ to ‘complete and utter pillock’ in around 4-5 minutes.
For all his success, and the obvious talent he has as a trainer (though I think Alan King is a touch better) does Nicholls strike anyone else as a tad arrogant and controlling, the sort of man who wouldn’t like being disagreed with?

April 10, 2008 at 19:44 #157307You might want to check with your contacts again beckster, as PAULCS has said, Kauto has been taken out of the Whitbread/Attheraces/Betfred/Bet365 Gold Cup.
April 10, 2008 at 22:07 #157331And in his teletext column tonight he says that Kauto & Master Minded are both ticking over before being let out for the summer.
April 11, 2008 at 00:20 #157337And he said after Cheltenham that Master Minded would go to Punchestown before being put away for the season, something he re-iterated after his defeat to Voy Por Ustedes.
Let’s just wait and see, shall we?
April 11, 2008 at 06:23 #157346yea wait and see dont underestermate him for changing mind lol,

Not sure I’d agree with that. It sounds as if you’re saying that Flat trainers are better than NH trainers. Whilst I don’t disagree with the names you mention, both O’Briens have proved themselves at both codes.
What about some of the NH legends; Rimell, Walwyn, Winter for example?April 11, 2008 at 12:25 #157376Anthony Bromley plays a huge part in the Nicholls success constantly finding great horses in France and Ireland. Not sure who does the spotting and buying for JP McManus, but they are miles behind in unearthing potential young stars.
April 11, 2008 at 16:00 #157423One of the things that has struck me over the last 2 years is that we are starting to see some classy flat recruits being trained by Paul Nichiolls to great success. The likes of Celestial Halo and Elusive Dream were both bought privately and both have been succesess at ditcheat. Will that trend continue next season. I would like to see the likes of The Last Drop, Salford Mill, Ask, Soapy Danger and Geordieland plying thier trade at ditcheat next winter.
April 11, 2008 at 21:16 #157470Its easy i know to blame the trainer but do you remember before cheltenham a little cross wired words said about noland and running in the arkle, its not all down to the trainer but when you have a owner who wants other options then it must become a nightmare.

yes agree but in the nland front regarding chelt, i beleive it was ithe owner who didunt really want him to run, with it being to soon over fences

Racing is a fickle sport Kerry, one minute someone is a world beater the next he’s gone – look at opinions about Kauto Star. People have short memories and are far too reactinary IMO. Its not just racing though to be fair its every sport.
Paul Nicholls is human he will make mistakes like anyone else but he knows what he’s doing and he gets it right far more often than he gets it wrong.
