Probably. He has to be a serious Champion Hurdle contender as he loves Cheltenham, battles up the hill and is a big strong horse that won’t mind the hustle bustle of the race. I’ve been impressed by Desert Quest too. The Champion Hurdle could be coming back to England in 2007.
November 12, 2006 at 15:42 #30648A fine weight carrying performance but he beat zilcho. Champion hurdle 1-2-3 for Ireland again IMO!
Bet you 50p they don’t. ;)
November 12, 2006 at 15:54 #30650Quote: from Grasshopper on 3:40 pm on Nov. 12, 2006[br]He might get to 160 eventually, RD – maybe even 165 – but right now, I can’t have him rated that highly.
It was a good performance today, but what did he beat?
The square root of sod-all, as far as I can see.
He can’t do any more than beat them out of sight. Apart from winning a Cesarewitch. I think he is quite good. I’d put him on 160 for sure. The fact that i’d do that means he is value for a couple of lbs more.
What you say is right, but with DC we are talking about untapped potential. While that performance may not be worth a rating of 160+, it doesn’t mean that he cannot win off of such a mark.
November 12, 2006 at 16:11 #30651Great performance from Detroit City especially as he was carrying a big weight and it was his first run of the season. He looks like an exceptional horse and i honestly cant see anything beating him if he lines up in the 2007 Champion Hurdle. ÂÂÂ
Dandan – Are you just a biased Irishman ?

You an ill informed man?
it was his first run of the season.
Has run twice already, once in charity race and since then in a "little handicap" at some track called Newmarket. He was certainly fit.
To be fair he was fit from running on the flat.

Very true, RD, but would you want to be taking 4/1 about it, five months before the Champion Hurdle is run?
Until he actually does run to that kind of mark, he is surely a lay at current prices in the Champion Hurdle market?
Nope :)
4/1 is too short. I’d want 4/1 on the day personally.
Right now, i’d want double figures. 10s is about right.
November 12, 2006 at 16:31 #30655Dandan- i meant first run of the season over hurdles.
November 12, 2006 at 18:12 #30656It was a terrific performance. he hurdled better than before (i felt anyway) and despite not having the fast paced field he apparently likes, dominated quite comfortably.
If anything I was left with the sense that he will improve again from this…
November 12, 2006 at 18:48 #30657I was very impressed and he is clearly going to be a foce to be reckoned with in terms of the Champion Hurdle. It’s worth bearing in mind though that Rooster Booster defied a 7 lb higher mark in similar fashion yet could still be backed at around 8/1 after his Greatwood. Good luck to anyone who takes the 4/1 but I wouldn’t touch it with a bargepole.
I’m sure connections of Harchibald and Macs Joy enjoyed seeing that performance. Presumably similar tactics will be adopted in the future and if that’s the case it’s likely they’ll go a good pace in March.
November 12, 2006 at 18:56 #30658With regards to a rating for Detroit City, using a crude 1 lb per length and ignoring weight for age, he’s beaten a 125 horse 37 lbs and a 127 horse 38 lbs. It’s fair to say he won’t be running in another handicap off less than 160. I’d be inclined to think he’ll be rated about 162 after this which is approx 5/6 lb short of Brave Inca. There is no doubt he’s a serious Champion Hurdle challenger.
Intersting to see you think they’ll continue to bowl along DJ. I’m not so certain I think today they wanted to ensure the race wasn’t run at a crawl particularly bearing in mind Crow Wood’s withdrawl.
What is obvious though is Detroit City is versatile enough to front run to good effect if he has to.
As well as Harchibald and Mac’s Joy DC bowling along at Cheltenham would bring a smile to the face of Paul Nicholls I would think too as it’ll play right into Desert Quest’s hands.
November 12, 2006 at 19:15 #30660I was impressed – he just keeps on winning.
It was visually impressive, and I realise that this can sometimes be deceiving, but I like to believe what I see with my own eyes, as it’s served me well betting wise in the past. He seems relatively straight forward, and has a high cruising speed that he can maintain. Connections feel he stays a trip too, which is a good thing for the Champion Hurdle (as Istabraq / Hardy Eustace have shown).
He seems nailed on for a place at least for me on that performance. Some of his other rivals have questions to answer – Macs Joy may prefer a less stiff track, Harchibald is anything but simple, Desert Quest has quirks (but is undoubtedly talented).
Will be fascinating to see how he acquits himself in the Bula in December, against a better class of opposition. Great to see a worthy replacement for the great Roooster Booster coming along!
November 12, 2006 at 19:44 #306615.6 in mid-November about a 5yo winning the Champion Hurdle???
Hmmm …
I’ll say "pass".
He could be the one to beat the 5yo hoodoo, but having him shorter than Brave Inca is madness IMO.

November 13, 2006 at 07:01 #30662Whilst the field may not have been as strong as the usual Greatwood field I can’t see how anyone can crab Detroit City’s run.
It could be said that he had the run of the race but to my eye it was an impressive performance from a horse that, even though I have followed him since I saw his debut run for Noseda at Lingfiled, continues to exceed my expectations.
He looks to me like a horse that would need further than two miles to be seen at his best over hurdles, winning the Cesarewitch would seem to confirm that, and that he was likely to be found out for a turn of foot after the last at the top level. In some ways he looks one-paced but it is some pace.
Is he going to win the Champion Hurdle next March? my head says unlikely but you can probably guess what my heart says!
Colin
November 13, 2006 at 07:55 #30663I think he is a good horse, but cannot see him winning the champion hurdle. There was nothing of note in the race today, a bunch of exposed handicappers and an over hyped Noel Meade horse. I still don’t think he has the sufficient cruising speed and I don’t think he is very fluent over his hurdles, not that Brave Inca is either….
4-1 ridiculous price.
