Maybe it’s because many Irish people pronounce some words differently from English and German folk?

Btw, is "tetonic" much to do with "teutonic", or is there a distinct difference?
November 27, 2008 at 20:12 #192588Dessie’s commentaries have been deteriorating badly over the past few years. He doesn’t seem to have the same enthusiasm for the game that he once had. He frequently misses fallers and mispronounces horses names. He must have been prouncing Clopf, as “Cloft” for at least a year before someone must have had a quiet word.
Its a pity really because he was a great commentator back in the day. His radio commentary of Dawn Run’s Gold Cup was awesome. I’ve posted a link to it below.

Hopefully Jerry Hannon will get to cover some more of the higher profile meetings in the next few years.
November 27, 2008 at 22:26 #192618I misread the title as "tectonic".
Which will be fine if he’s commentating on the Galway Plate.

Boom boom!
November 27, 2008 at 23:04 #192629And why does he always say threeo and not trio? Or is that an irish thing?
November 27, 2008 at 23:06 #192633No, just a Dessie thing. As some of us have remarked before, he seems to be going through the motions until retirement which can’t come soon enough for him or us.

November 28, 2008 at 04:29 #192734That’s very good – Dessie obviously just getting his bearings fo the first 3f!
November 28, 2008 at 04:59 #192742The full story there is that Dessie was doing a corporate gig in a tent at the Curragh and got delayed, hence he had to sprint back to the commentary box and just made it for the end of the race. It’s actually one of his better commentaries!

His laboured breathing was unnerving.
He could do a job for the ‘smile’ digi channel when turns it in
November 28, 2008 at 05:17 #192746Personal Colume (Column) is the one that gets me.
November 28, 2008 at 13:44 #192770That’s brilliant – he sounds as though he is going to have a heart attack.
I suppose that’s what comes of the commentators not calling the runners to post in Ireland.
Not naming any names, I can think of more than one occasion when I have seen some of our callers making a mad dash to the box when at least half the field are already at the post.
November 28, 2008 at 14:27 #192780Awful commentator for me and didn’t he even admit that he hated the job these days a few years ago?
I remember him not even noticing that Solerina fell in one race and he seems to do the bare minimum each time instead of putting that little bit extra in as say, Simon Holt would.
I like the irish commentator that RTE usually use – Tony O’Hehir I think?
November 28, 2008 at 18:12 #192835Now that would be funny to have Graham Norton to do a commentary especially if he threw in his usuall homosexual puns, innuendos and references.
Dessie very much like GG is just plodding on till the pension book can be cashed in.
Jerry Hannon is a much better caller and deserves his chance to do some more of the big meetings although its a pity some of ours dont get a chance to do some over their, I know Jim McGrath did a couple of Irish Legers and Mike Cattermole did a Downpatrick either this year or last.
November 28, 2008 at 19:15 #192858Wasn’t there an Irish caller at Lingfield a year or so ago, or am I imagining it?
Entirely feasible – Jerry Hannon has been booked to commentate on "Irish Night" meetings a few times in the past. He did Sandown and Worcester during summer 2006 alone.

November 28, 2008 at 21:10 #192905Jerry Hannon is a fantastic commentator. He can make the most ordinary of races sound exciting. Some of Dessie’s calls nowadays would cure insomnia.
