Named after the great horse but unfortunately there isn’t one like him in the race.
Petit Robin: Nicky Henderson had half made up his mind that this horse needed further than 2 miles but he’s been working so well (you may have seen the video), no doubt with some fast horses, he’s decided to run him here over 2 miles.
Whether he should be fav or not remains to be seen.
Well Chief: He might find this a bit easier than he did trying to catch Twist Magic. However I feel he should have done better and on this track I think he could be taken of his feet again. I think he needs a course like Cheltenham as he is more of a staying 2 miler these days than he is speedy.
Fix the Rib: Led Master Medic and co. merry gallop last time out despite some minor jumping errors never looked like getting caught. Obviously he’s very useful but he’s going to have to step up a gear to run these horses ragged. He wasn’t stopping last time and nothing ever looked like getting near him but a couple of these should and those little niggling mistakes could become big ones. His old side kick Master Medic was fancied by a lot of faces to run into a place yesterday and may that’s as much as we can expect of him today in this class. Hard horse to weigh up.
Crack Away Jack: His trainer watches too much TV. A commentator said he thought he would jump better with more horses around him or against better animals. Next thing you know he’s thrown in at the deep end. Nicky Henderson’s River Theatre would have ensured a good pace in the novice but she’s decided to go all the way and really test the horse.
Last season Crack Away Jack had 3 quick races and run really badly on the 3rd one. It could be she’s not had him quite as fit as she did last season. Maybe I’m suspicious but it wasn’t just his jumpimg at Sandown there was no sparkle to the horse and his finishing effort looked 2 gallops short of a finish to me.
I’m probably being biased and I wouldn’t run him in this if he were mines but it might just be what he needs to wake up his ideas. He looked like he couldn’t be bothered at Sandown and never stood back at a fence in the country. It was like I’ll jump them as I come to them.
I’msingingtheblues; He’s a fair animal on his day and Paul Nichols could have sent one of any 3 or 4 he has for this. He won’t be far of the pace and would want to get to the from a fair way out which will ensure a very strong gallop.
Briarus: He must be pretty straight to running here without a previous outing. He looked like he was going to have a good season after winning here last year but was thrown in at the deep end against Kauto Star them Master Minded. He’ll be more at home in this class and may run better than his betting suggests. He’s another horse who likes to be up with the pace which confuses things even further.
Overall I can see this being to speedy for Well Chief and the race developing into a catch me if you can. I’m pretty sure Petit Robin will be staying on at the finish especially with Nicky considering upping him in trip but as much as I am against him running in this I am hoping Crack Away jack will waken up his ideas and win this by running past the lot of them from 2 out.
Crack Away Jack 13/2 but EW under the circumstances.
December 27, 2009 at 10:35 #265813I can’t believe this isn’t on the telly, and it’s not on ATR so I can’t even watch the replays. I’m gutted.

According to his trainer, Crack Away Jack had problems jumping out of the ground lto, and has had intensive schooling since.
Sharp track and good ground are right up his street, and if he jumps efficiently, could well have the legs of these.
13/2 has also disappeared, which is never a bad sign from this stable.December 27, 2009 at 11:43 #265828Somersby would be favourite for this if he was in it! If it was a hurdles race Crack away jack would be 6/4fav,if he jumps he wins!A lot of "ifs" but i have taken 6/1 and think he is worth the risk!

RUK replays are free on their website moehat.
Split stakes on Fix The Rib and Crack Away Jack for me. A number of the other runners are starting to look like they may be past their sell by date.
December 27, 2009 at 12:05 #265834Fix The Rib will jump them senseless.
December 27, 2009 at 12:07 #265835Thanks for that; thought it was just ATR that did free replays; got racing radio on [which I always forget about] but will enroll with RUK.
December 27, 2009 at 12:08 #265836First time I’ve backed Crack Away Jack, so will see how it goes. Can’t stand the way he’s held up, and that is the reason I’ll more than likely swerve him in the Arkle. But today, anyway, conditions/opponents/price look ok, kind of.
gl.
December 27, 2009 at 12:09 #265837I think Briarus is overpriced for this – goes well fresh, likes the course, and seems to have been aimed at this. I think many of the others have question marks against them, so I’m happy with Sportings 16/1 and have backed him each way.
December 27, 2009 at 12:16 #265844Twiston-Davies horses aren’t in great form but 12/1 Mahogany Blaze is an insult and is bordering on ridiculous. On Connaught chase form, at the weights, he should be priced at least equal to Well Chief.

Well he got round,is as close as i would go to saying this horse can jump a fence, not that he was ever at the races mind!
