I’m surprised that no-one else has mentioned about Denman’s abject performance at Aintree today. Many people have commented in the past that Aintree does not play to the horse’s strengths, yet Paul Nicholls was more than happy to run the horse today. So after his defeat I find it rather laughable that he used the excuse that the course didn’t suit the horse….
April 7, 2011 at 21:53 #349138I’ll never be truly convinced by Denman until Nicholls runs him in a twilight claimer at Wolverhampton.
Seriously though, the course doesn’t suit him, I don’t really know why they keep sending him back there.

Money!
There’s a dearth of level-weight staying chases at this time of the year on ground soft enough to provide the test that Denman needs, and the 4k he earned today for running a poor race could quite easily have been quadrupled, or more, given a little help from the weather.
His owner mightn’t need the money, but his trainer still has fish to fry.April 7, 2011 at 23:37 #349159Does seem a strange thing to do. Some horses obviously prefer going right or left handed and perform better on their favoured tracks, but Denman just sulks if you send him to the wrong place. Look at Ireland last year.
April 8, 2011 at 08:31 #349191Why is it "laughable" and what’s this about "keep sending him back there"?
Until yesterday, Denman had run just
once
in his life at Aintree, falling when challenging.
Certainly worth having another go there, and where else could they run him anyway?
April 8, 2011 at 10:31 #349205Doesn’t win anything stood in his stable, some wise sages said Desert Orchid couldn’t go left handed but he somehow managed to scramble a Gold Cup.
April 8, 2011 at 11:15 #349216Looked like he didn’t like it, ran like he didn’t like it.

Denman ran badly on his previous try at Aintree, just as he had around the sharp track at Kempton, and the reason he ran yesterday had much more to do with garnering gelt for the trainer’s championship than any propensity the horse had shown for such courses.
April 8, 2011 at 12:35 #349237Denman ran twice this year before Aintree. Had he not ran again this season people would be moaning. We know he does not perform going right handed, so Punchestown is out, so where else would he go? The Bet365 would’ve been possible, but probably too firm, Kauto is entered in that anyway.
Denman had a hard race at Cheltenham, it was always on the cards he’d be below form at Liverpool. However, it was quite right Nicholls tried; could’ve still won by running a stone below form. But didn’t even run to that.
Do think Ruby rode a poor race though. As soon as the pace was very slow, should’ve scrubbed him along to lead. Has no chance with Nacarat in what was essentially made in to a 2 1/2 mile race. The horse enjoys himself out the front and may have rekindled his enthusiasm. Probably wouldn’t have made the difference, but we don’t know for sure.I don’t think Aintree is the problem, Denman just needs longer between hard races.

Denman’s record:
1 from 4 on sharp tracks (at 12/1 on)
3 from 5 on RH tracks.Draw your own conclusions.

1 win since his last Gold Cup win, shocking.
Can’t believe people say he’s better than Kauto Star, ludacris comments.
April 8, 2011 at 15:36 #349265As Denman was 5/4 some of you must have filled your wheelbarrows laying the beast?
Oh hang on though, to do that you would have had to do it before the race not after

Wouldn’t back Denman with someone else’s, his record around sharp tracks is abysmal
Do try and keep up, Yeats.

I’m afraid I haven’t got time to trawl threads, it only counts if it’s on this thread
In any case if the cap doesn’t fit in your case I’m sure it does for others.
How many grand did you win anyway laying the beast reet hard?April 8, 2011 at 21:46 #349349Blimey I’ve seen soms bad spelling in my time, but Mr Wilson’s ludacris takes the biscuit
April 9, 2011 at 04:55 #349371Methinks Mr Wilson likes his Rap. Have you never heard of Ludacris?
