Some very interesting betting patterns on that race.
You’re not joking on that point.
January 14, 2008 at 21:46 #135168Yep.Bit silly, will retreat. When all is said and done, in this sport, the jockey should be aware and keep count. Mistakes will happen, he didn’t surely do it on purpose. That’s all.

What makes you say that David?
The two best looking horses in the parade ring, Cathedral Rock and Shouldhavehadthat, were backed at the expense of Harringay who didn’t look anything special.
Having said that, and I haven’t checked, I suspect the market at Fakenham this afternoon wasn’t particularly strong, so it wouldn’t have taken much to swing the market either way.
Not sure what happened on the exchanges though?
January 14, 2008 at 22:39 #135187Pulling a tape across the track to section of part of the run in is done at a number of other courses and probably should also be done at Fakenham. Kelso and Cheltenham are two courses that do this at every meeting.
January 15, 2008 at 00:08 #135199I have made mistakes at work, Paul, including the occasional howler, but I expect to be given a good ol’ b*llocking for them. If I went in to see my boss having cocked-up big style, shrugged my shoulders and said ‘sh*t happens’ I wouldn’t anticipate being in the job much longer.
Any anger, irritation and annoyance directed at Denis O’Regan in this instance is perfectly justified and no excuse can be offered on his part. Other than staying aboard the horse, O’Regan’s only job was to count 1, 2, 3 and it proved too difficult for him, causing him to make an enormous error…something comparable to me massaging figures to hide a huge sum of money I couldn’t account for.
January 15, 2008 at 09:10 #135217One point that hasn’t yet been made is that for all that Fakenham is a very sharp track, with a circuit of barely a mile, it’s not as if there aren’t plenty of comparably short tracks in Ireland. To that end, going round three times in a 3m chase should not have registered that much of a surprise to O’Regan as it appears to have done.
Moreover, he reportedly walked an entire circuit of the track prior to the meeting. Did it not occur to him that a) he only passed six fences in so doing, and b) it didn’t take him very long to do? Something ought to have registered at that point.

Maybe he reckoned that one counted, J?
January 15, 2008 at 11:23 #135234So does anyone know what these "very interesting betting patterns" were on this race because I certainly didn’t see any – and more importantly, nothing has been reported to the BHA.
Quite simply, the jockey made a horrendous error and has been punished accordingly. Some say a ban of 14 days is not long enough, but I would imagine that this jockey won’t be making the same mistake again in a hurry when he returns.

January 15, 2008 at 11:32 #135235in powerboat racing, the jolly rodger flag is shown to all boats to signify they are on their last lap
pehaps this could be used in horse racing, not that i am suggesting a pirate flag is appropriate, of course

Maybe he stopped for a chat at the second down the back straight

January 15, 2008 at 16:03 #135313Let’s hope Harringay wasn’t put up by the (diabolically unregulated) Racing Post, mansun, otherwise we’ll have to call in the Tipster Police…
January 15, 2008 at 16:35 #135327No Need for that Mansun
January 15, 2008 at 16:52 #135338mansun,
i think you are well capable of getting yourself banned to be honest.
i don’t think many (any?) people have ‘thrown waves of insults’ at you, but people have picked up on some of the many, many things you have said and engaged in argument and debate with you. does that unnerve you, perhaps?
