I have to say I am pleased for him if he is that unhappy then get out.
Personally I didn’t rate him that highly and would always avoid what he rode but that was just me.

I thought he was a good bold rider and knows what he wants so good luck to him at the sales rings :good: Being joint second jockey at a big yard- especially in these days of retained or preferred riders for owners as well as trainers- is an odd one. A few scattered big peaches and not much meat and potatoes in between.

    Follows a pattern.
Unless a Grand National jockey has a top job – winning more top class races – it’s hard for them to keep enthusiasm around the gaffs.

He sounded a bit of a princess in his retirement interview: wouldn’t listen to his agent, wouldn’t go to a track for one unfancied ride, was just sitting on the sidelines waiting for Townend to get injured so he could have all the sweets again. It’s a very hard life as a jockey and it sounds like it didn’t agree with him.

He looked a fine jockey in his purple patch a couple of years ago though. Two very intelligent rides around the Grand National course and seemed totally unfazed by the prestige of a race or ‘pressure’ if you’ll excuse the wishy washy phrase. I suppose not really having your heart in it can be an advantage like that.

    A very good jockey.

Rule the World is what everyone remembers but two other rides that stick out for me is Kemboys win at leopardstown and Faugheens win in the 3 mile hurdle at Punchestown.

I cant recall him ever really making a big mistake on a fancied horse.

Agreed TWM. Actually my favourite jockey here in Ireland. I always was happy when he was on a horse i fancied. Was really hoping he’d kick on when Ruby had retired, then he got the bad injury + clearly his head hasnt been in it for a good while.

Willie confirmed his talent himself by saying he’d probably have been no.1 in years to come at Closutton.

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!
