How did he get beat on Stratagem in the 4-25 at Warwick. I actually backed the winner so was delighted with his ride but had you backed the favourite you would be annoyed to say the least.
By all accounts he is a very nice chap and puts a lot into racing but still it was a poor rideMarch 31, 2022 at 18:20 #1590513“I’d be a very nice chap if I was minted. It’s only because I’m skint that I’m such a miserable ******.”
Quote from my dear old Dad there.
Who was far from skint btw!
But I’m sure you get his drift.
I would describe David Maxwell as a jockey as “erratic.”
I’ve seen him give horses very good rides – but this wasn’t one of them.
But tbf I’ve seen him have greater calamities too.

March 31, 2022 at 20:20 #1590529Exactly, CAS – I wouldn’t even put today in his all-time top-five calamities.
On the flip side IMO the ride he gave Bob And Co at Punchestown last year to beat Billaway was a peach.
Bob And Co is a lousy jumper and Maxwell took him wide so he couldn’t get half lengthed at any of the final few fences and got up on the line.
If Maxwell was consistently bad, punters could oppose him every time with impunity.
But he isnt.

If you backed Strategem, I can fully understand why you would be frustrated. He travelled well and looked sure to win.
However, even allowing for Maxwell’s limitations as a rider, I am not entirely sure it was his fault. It just looked like a case of a strong travelling horse that found nothing off the bridle and got mugged by a horse that stayed on under pressure and was more resolute.
Not sure there was a lot Maxwell could have done about it.
March 31, 2022 at 21:10 #1590538I agree tbh – not his best ride, but definitely not his worst either.
I do feel too much is being made of it tbh.

I never back his horses because he’s not a good jockey but always hope he wins because of the money and hard work he’s putting in
A lot of his horses go off very short prices and people like to jockey bash when a shortie loses regardless who was riding.
David maxwell 26% strike rate since 2017
Brian Hughes champion jockey 18% strike rate
April 1, 2022 at 12:10 #1590608And the stats on following them both to a level stake?

Last 200 races.
Maxwell, 50 winners, +6.89.
Hughes, 45 winners, -6.54.I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysApril 1, 2022 at 14:20 #1590621Thank you!
There you go, Maxwell more profitable to back blind than Hughes.
Clearly the betting market is overdoing the disrespect for the fella!

When is Nicholls going to say to him “Thanks but no thanks”?
January 28, 2023 at 14:07 #1632609Lol CAS when he stops paying his bills on time , it’s a shame to see some decent horses not getting the full chance to win
January 28, 2023 at 14:11 #1632611Nicholls must think how much would those horses improve with Cobden on their back.
January 28, 2023 at 14:12 #1632612Indeed, never, he owns the horses he rides.
“How many outside rides did David Maxwell get this season?”
Said no one ever.
But sometimes the market overreacts and his talented mounts start at too big a price.
