Good morning, Ian. Yep, I’m sure you all saw the race, but each of us often read races differently. I was simply giving my take.

I’m always interested in supplemented horses, especially those of an age to show considerable improvement in private. But Passenger caught my eye not so much for the supplement as the man who made it. I don’t have figures, but I suspect that Stoute rarely supplements. The Dante supplement cost £14,000. At around 6 times that figure, Stoute, never optimistic, will need a ton of confidence to put him in.

Fair comment, Joe, and even if we had the stats it’s Stoute’s results supplementing horses that matters here as you perhaps suggest.

Passenger is certainly the best Wood Ditton winner I can remember for a while.

I found it a bit depressing to hear the historic contest simply referred to as “a newcomers race” in the RP spotlight.

    Where’s the respect for history?!

Stoute did supplement Ulysses into the Derby for the same connections but they wasted their money. Once bitten, twice shy?

I think they would be crazy. A Wood Ditton winner winning the Derby?!

Save him for Royal Ascot and the King Edward VII looks a far better option.

My take on Passenger was he may not be ready for winning a Derby but as a long term prospect is one to keep onside
He took time to pick up again (turn of foot) but he was checked and lost momentum.. A bit like cycling a bicycle at speed slowing down then moving through the gears again, difficult to do it instantly and confusing for the horse on only his 2nd start… Don’t forget it took The Foxes a few races to properly get going and Passenger was thrown into the deep end

Agree, he looks like a typical long term Stoute project. His sire was best at 4, winning the Eclipse and International and only found Enable (in receipt of her allowances) too good for him in the King George and the Arc.

on stats, Stoute’s last 3 Derby winners ran in The Dante.
