showing me age now but who misses the old build up of FA Cup final ‘Its a Knockout’ then meet the players when the captain use to do the old ‘pen’ pictures of his team mates and seeing the teams in the dressing room after the game with their pints of milk. For me it meant so much back then
May 17, 2025 at 11:09 #1730621It is a pity the FA Cup final has been diminished but times change.
Its heyday was when the FA Cup Final was the only domestic match shown live. It doesn’t mean as much now, when the Premier League is so huge and there are live matches shown every week. It doesn’t even end the season now, given there is still a week of the Premier League to go.
I also think a trip to Wembley for supporters of non London teams used to mean a bit more in that era.
May 17, 2025 at 11:14 #1730623100% better before.
FA cup Semi finals at Wembley take the gloss of aswell
I have to say though the atmosphere when Taunton Town have made the final qualifying round over the years is still very magicalI’m a right dinosaur though as I’d still have the old European Cup format (League winners only)
Group stages were okay, this new format is bullsh!t ..

May 17, 2025 at 11:30 #1730626going to wembley meant everything then they brought in the semi finals to be played there, instead of Villa Park and alike.
Like you Nathan i’m an old dinosaur my first game live 1966 west ham away(chelsea) the old european cup was great remember Forest drawing Liverpool right early in comp(my old brain cant remember what round)
Think there was about 500 sides in it this year
and had to keep asking people what the format wasMay 17, 2025 at 13:41 #1730673I was really into football as a kid and from the mid 70s to early 80s it was the day I couldn’t wait for. I remember my Uncle worked somewhere where he could “obtain” the programmes and my day was glued to the television from when it first came on to when they oddly filmed the teams in the baths afterwards. Back then this was probably one of the very few games you could actually watch live on television.
I never went but as we lived right next to the M4 just outside London we would watch the fan coaches going by and nine times out of ten the Royal cars going by from Windsor. The more I know the less I understand.
May 17, 2025 at 13:57 #1730681As ever it’s all about the money, those shiny new stadiums don’t come cheap.
Racing is not the only sport that could benefit from a bit less quantity and a bit more quality. The fact that Channel 5 was able to pick up the forthcoming Club World Cup without too much bother says it all.
May 17, 2025 at 14:11 #1730685its also on the streaming site DAZN which is best known for its boxing content

Until the early 1980s it was the only* club game shown live. The only other live games were European and international matches.
It seems bizarre now but football clubs used to be opposed to showing matches live because they thought it would have a negative impact on attendances. Hence the ban on matches being shown live at 3pm on Saturday even now.
*maybe the League Cup final was as well.

yes you are right RTB when we beat dirty leeds in 1970 we went on the following year to beat Real Madrid in ECWC, then sadly (although reached league cup final following year) it all went tits up at Chelsea, maybe I was a mascohist back then but nothing better (being a Chelsea fan)than going up to rotherham or mansfield and getting humped
May 17, 2025 at 19:15 #1730752Well done, HDLG. Nice winner for you there!
