    India
    We cannot play.
Some of our staff are positive for covid and we want to go home.
Oh, and the IPL starts soon so we are off.

Is that it in a nutshell?
Joe Bloggs from Brighton took the week off work booked hotel train tickets saved for a year to attend the test.
Hotels and pubs taking a hit. Contractual obligations broken. Vendors seriously out of pocket.
Many people outside of the area attending day one will already have booked into hotels the night before.
There is no point playing the match at another time.
Brings the game into disrepute and totally destroys the integrity of test cricket.
I see some parallels with the attempted breakaway by elite football clubs and the decision by the Australian and New Zealand Rugby teams not to attend the world cup this year.
Selfish money driven decisions which all forgot the sports core element ( the fans).

A farcical end to an otherwise good, if bonkers, series. One minute England didn’t look like they knew one of the bat from the other and then it was India’s turn.

Award England the match, call the series a draw (fair result) and move on. Playing the Fifth Test as a one off match at another time is pointless as you say.

Just make sure that OT is right at the front of the queue when test matches are next being handed out.

Who would want to stage an end of tour test match now? More to the point, who would commit ( financially) before hand to attending?

In the immediate aftermath, the ECB announced India had withdrawn, and the series was therefore 2-2. That was almost immediately followed by a further, non-commital, statement about the series score.

Its shambolic, and I certainly believe it is connected to the oceans of cash at stake in the IPL.

The biggest clue for me that it is to do with the IPL is the ECB chief insisting that it most definitely isn’t. Tell us what is if you know what it isn’t then.

The BCCI clearly do not want to see the match as being forfeit and losing points in the World Test Championship.

But in my opinion India did in effect forfeit the match. The series should be declared a 2-2 draw. And the BCCI should compensate the ECB and Lancashire for loss of income. They make enough money from the IPL so can afford it.

Feel very sorry for the fans and for all the businesses that will lose out.

If it was the Windies of Bangladesh you could bet your bottom dollar there would be consequences. India however are all powerful.

Yes, I doubt the ICC will stand up to the BCCI.

My team – Lancashire – is going to have a massive hole in its budget next year, especially as Old Trafford does not have a Test.

May need to arrange a few rock concerts at Old Trafford for next summer to fix it.
