Did anyone else watch the Prix Guillaume d’Ornano from Deauville this afternoon on ATR? Three british raiders, inc Twice Over and River Proud. Well what a sh*t ride the french jockey (S Pasquier) gave Twice Over almost bringing him down as he decided to try and come through a barely existent gap at the same time as another horse, proceeding to cause him to clip the heels and stumble losing the best part of 6 lengths and all of his momentum. He then got blocked off going for his next gap and decided to let him come home in his own time. All of this on a course as wide as a football pitch. I had never heard of him, dunno where Henry got him from but guarantee he wont be using him again. Run best ignored. River Proud ran well in 2nd but Twice Over was only a length off the lead when it all happened and poss would have won nicely.
August 23, 2008 at 23:17 #177881You’ve never heard of Stephane Pasquier….that says quite a lot on its own!
And Henry Cecil won’t be using him again…well he will be if he runs Khallid Abdullah horses in France considering he is retained!
Must admit I didn’t see the race but the guy is class.August 24, 2008 at 01:13 #177903Was quite suprised by the betting on this race.
Morning price of 3-1 for River Proud, went to put a bet on it 10mins before and River Proud was 8/11! Managed to get 2/1 on Betfair but the horse still didnt ride his best.
Pasquier gave an uncharacteristic performance on Twice Over I thought.
Was it Pasquier who was on Twice Over on his last Grp2 win? That was a pretty decent ride in all fairness

Each to their own, I suppose!
River Proud’s been a disappointment ever since the luckless Poulains, where in Excellent Art fashion, he should have been winning some handy races by now.

No. Ted Durcan rode him the last time and to think he comes in for enough criticism on here!
I may have to bow to other peoples superior knowledge of french jockeys but that does not make me a numpty as to whether it was a crap ride or not. Interestingly enough Pasquier rode the winner Russian Cross in all of his previous runs but he rode a stinker here.

No, but it does pose questions about your depth of knowledge of the sport, and does give the impression that you may have been talking through your pocket.

August 24, 2008 at 22:08 #178044As others have mentioned Pasquier is retained by Juddmonte in France and you should take a look at his ride on their Rail Link to win the 2007 Prix de l’arc de Triomphe.
August 24, 2008 at 22:13 #178046Regardless of Pasquier’s past glories; he had a shocker here.
August 24, 2008 at 22:41 #178052I’m not the best judge in the qorld and don’t follow flat racing closely, but I have heard of Pasquier and Khalid Abdulla simply would not employ the bloke if he was no good.
Every jockey has an off day and it seems to be a bit of a thing in this country to knock the french jocks. They make mistakes on our courses because they don’t ride over here enough that’s all. But the best, and that includes Pasquier, can hold their own anywhere. Just look at Peslier an underated jockey these days in my opinion
August 25, 2008 at 02:29 #178082Full of praise for Pasquier’s ride on Manduro in the Prince Of Wales’ IIRC.
