November 3, 2009 at 19:20 #256953cant believe gazzard has retired would not mind at edgbaston as ambrose might be leaving was reported in local rag as being un happy is gazzard injured or disillusioned?
November 3, 2009 at 21:31 #256982Welcome to the forum mt151169, whats with the numbers on your username, is it your date of birth?
The reason behind Gazzard retiring is to enable him to concentrate on a career in the financial sector.

November 4, 2009 at 17:15 #257089I don’t think there is anybody crazy enough to back Glamorgan for next season’s 40 over league but if there is they should note that Glamorgan have been deducted 2 points for a bad pitch which will be carried over for the start of the said competition.

November 10, 2009 at 17:43 #258139If Hoggard’s release from Yorkshire was in part due to money offered, and Leicestershire is still not among the most flush clubs out of the 18, then the move of the former to the latter doesn’t quite add up to me. Or am I missing something here?

November 10, 2009 at 22:12 #258181There was a host of offers from several other clubs including Essex and Sussex, perhaps he chose Leicestershire for geographical reason’s as it’s closer to Yorkshire and he can get back quicker for proper yorkshire puddings yum yum.

November 16, 2009 at 16:20 #258965Update; Monty Panesar has left Northants to join Sussex on a three year deal.
Steffan Jones has joined Derbyshire on a one year contract after playing for the county on-loan last season.

November 18, 2009 at 10:20 #259235Worcestershire have signed Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan as their Overseas player but he will not be available until mid July.
Shakib says " I am thrilled and inspired to be joining the team once graced by Ian Botham, Imran Khan and Kapil Dev."
I am a bit surprised he does not mention Graeme Hick or Andrew Hughes in his list of inspirations.

James Anyon has joined Sussex from Warwickshire.
Dirk Nannes has signed for Notts for the Twenty20 only.

November 27, 2009 at 13:28 #260770James Anyon’s not a bad acquisition for Sussex, I fancy. Certainly some elements of their pace attack are ageing rapidly now – I can’t imagine there are too many good, injury-free seasons left to be eked out of the likes of James Kirtley, Robin Martin-Jenkins, etc.
I’m less enthused about the signing of Monty for the same county. Not just because leg-, rather than finger-spinners have on balance prospered more at Hove over the last 15 years or so, but also because I’d far rather have seen Will Beer entrusted with a run in the County Championship team.
Maybe, at 21, the thinking is that Beer is still a year or two away from being thrust into regular first-team action without the risk of getting some fearsome clatterings, but I’m not sure that isn’t just being a bit overcautious.

They maybe protecting Beer from a few clatterings but if he does not get much of an involvement then they will also be holding him back from taking a lot of cheaper wickets as Division Two is not the same standard of Division One and Sussex look about the strongest team in their league.
I think Monty is one to keep an eye on, not likely to get an England recall any time soon with Swann and Rashid seemingly ahead of him, Hove being a spinners track, playing in div 2 against presumably lesser players. He didn’t take anywhere nearly as many wickets as expected at Northants last season but the noise from there is that the tracks had more pace in them and less help for the spinners and a move could rejuvenate him. I will be keeping a look out for the leading wicket taker market and at this moment in time Monty would be high up on my list, hopefully the bookies take the view that he is a has been and dangle a large carrot.
