Another example of the gross stupidity which has dragged in low-grade midsummer jumping to foul up our major race days. Sigh….
Not forgetting the low grade summer flat racing at Thirsk, Redcar etc. and what on earth were Kempton doing with one of their all weather evening meetings in Ascot week. Too much racing under both codes.
Kempton had a meeting because they always do on Wednesday evenings.
As their website says ‘Wednesday night is race night’
June 17, 2010 at 19:23 #301584indeed it is crazy that theres summer jumping during royal ascot just as its barmy to have to put up with that wretched all weather racing during the cheltenham festival!
Who had to put up with what exactly? I watched Cheltenham on Channel 4, I didn’t watch the all weather that week at all.
This seems to be a difficult premise to understand for some: if you don’t like something, don’t watch it.
July 3, 2010 at 08:29 #304294Apparently the result of the first race photo last night at Beverley was incorrectly called by the judge before he corrected himself 15 secs later accompanied by laughter.
This drama was missed by RUK viewers as was a proper view of the horses passing the winning post as RUK preferred to show a promo which has been shown a "thousand" times before of the goodies they have in store for subscribers in the coming weeks rather than let subscribers hear the result announced.
Later on the senior racecourse judge Jonathan Dimsdale also incorrectly called the third horse in a race, it’s not the first time this judge has been involved in controversy and is this really acceptable when there are millions of pounds at stake and he thinks it’s funny when he does get it wrong?
July 31, 2010 at 06:31 #15809Do the BHA employ too many people of limited intelligence?
For reasons best known to themselves the BHA scheduled races to be run at both Bath and Bangor at 5.30 yesterday. Eventually someone cottoned on (better late than never) and shortly before the offs an announcement was made that the 5.30 at Bath would be delayed 5 minutes to avoid the clash.
Both races then went off on time but unfortunately still clashed as the race at Bath was 5fs and the Bangor race a 3 mile hurdle.July 31, 2010 at 09:03 #310141I think the main point is that they achieved their aim of creating bedlam. Glorious Goodwood, Galway and a couple of afternoon meetings just isn’t enough when everyone’s going home from work or sitting down for dinner.
The Bath card was the perfect candidate for a seventh race, as it had barely enough runners to fill one race and 5.30 was the perfect time. I heard the ATR commentator claiming after the first two races that Pat Dobbs must be kicking himself at missing the first two winners. I searched in vain across all the information channels, including ATR itself, to find out who had actually ridden the beasts and they all still had Pat Dobbs down as the rider. The first mention of the new pilot was in the results themselves on the Sportinglife site. It’s nice to be kept informed and it’s nice to know that information as pertinent as who actually rides the horse is reserved for those viewers watching when races are taking place on the other channel. Well done The Rabble.
July 31, 2010 at 09:30 #310150Jamie Spencer was like a yoyo on his mounts yesterday, RUK experts persistently referred to him riding horses at Haydock last night throughout their broadcast.
August 2, 2010 at 19:49 #15832Hot Favourite withdrawn at Windsor but public not informed
Pickwick was apparently withdrawn about 2 minutes before the off but no announcement was made on course and both racegoers at the track and viewers on tv were left to ponder whether the horse would run or not.
Even the course commentator was left to beg for information and both ATR presenters were suitably disgusted at the lack of information.
Unfortunately this wasn’t an isolated incident and it appears it is policy not to inform the public till after the race. It really does beggar belief and compare it with Ireland were all withdrawals are announced no matter how late and even if they have to cut into Dessie’s commentary.
You’ve got to wonder what are the likes of Paul Roy and Nic Coward think when they see things like this, do they care?
We’ve got Racing for Change and guys in charge of our sport can’t even get the basics right.August 2, 2010 at 20:54 #310646Pickwick was apparently withdrawn about 2 minutes before the off but no announcement was made on course and both racegoers at the track and viewers on tv were left to ponder whether the horse would run or not.

August 2, 2010 at 21:36 #310655most racegoers in attendance knew that the fav was not going to run, after being installed it became fractious and was led away, ryan moore had dismounted and both horse and jockey were some hundred yards away from stalls at least 2 minutes before off, mike cattermole had informed everyone that it was not going to run,
I had refunded money to some punters BEFORE off,
the usual R4 rip offs ensued, 45p in £1 on an 1/1 chance
August 2, 2010 at 21:55 #310658You’re losing your touch Barry. Refunding punters when you could have been getting busy with some chalk moves! Surely the horse walking 200yds away from the stalls should have been the cue to clip it into 4/5

Mike Catt may have thought it wasn’t going to run but he started his commentary of the race with, "There has been no announcement with regards Pickwicks participation, what has happened to the PA" so he could hardly have made an official announcement 2 minutes earlier.
If you knew so well in advance why was the market not re-formed?People need to know this sort information officially as soon as possible, not everyone is glued to a tv set and is certain how far away from the stalls a horse is, bet there were still bets going in for him right up to the off in betting shops all over the coutry as well as on Betfair.
It’s just not good enough from those in charge of the sport.
August 3, 2010 at 10:03 #310693mike cattermole cant officially declare it a non runner , but , he told the public it wasn’t gonna run.
what does it matter if the public back the favourite in betting shops or exchanges they get there money back anyway,
and, if you back other horses your odds are improved by the withdrawal.
the R4 not matching the fav’s odds.
August 3, 2010 at 10:14 #310695Why didn’t you re-form the market then?
The horse was still listed and traded on Betfair in running with no deduction for the other runners.
Why wasn’t it announced a non runner over the pa before the race like they do every time in Ireland?August 3, 2010 at 10:41 #310703I did reform, but, 30 other bookmakers needed to also for a reformed market, unfortunately (no fortunately) without exchanges 95% of "MODERN" on-course bookmakers wouldn’t have a clue.
what they do in Ireland obviously doesn’t apply here;
including betting 200% overound on many races.
September 23, 2010 at 14:09 #16289Not doing his job again Paul, the 2.50 at Perth & 3.00 at Ponty both run at exactly the same time 3.00.
Not good enough when racing needs every penny it can get and prize money is on a non stop decline.September 23, 2010 at 14:20 #318906

Also can you please tell me why there are cars allowed near the paddocks because Ryan Mania has been an unfortunate victim of a fall nothing short of a car crash after coming off in the 2.50 and flying into the bonnet of a BMW near the paddocks.
This jumps season is going to be long and extremely boring, bring on the real stuff 2011!
