I don’t know if Mirium Francome qualifys as a commentator, but her trackside interviews make me cringe. A wife of an ex-champion jockey (who I respect as a TV pundit, I should add) who would like nothing more than to get to her hubby’s stature in the racing world. I fear she will not, and should stick to tupperware parties and socialite events at the Hilton. She gives the impression of being a person who knows diddly about racing, and is just there to further her own well being. Maybe she should team up with Nigella Lawson for a double act? :)
May 19, 2002 at 12:12 #99217Jason,
Wors fail me when trying to descibe a Hamner commentary…
May 19, 2002 at 12:34 #99218What about the old boy from the States who covered the last Breeder’s Cup?
"AAAAAAAAAAAnnnnnd the fiiieeeeeeeeeeeld turnnnnnnnns for home…"
I thought he was quality. The way he called home Unbridled Elaine, Banks Hill, Johannesburg and Tiznow – superb. All good commentators should be able to enhance the experience of the race, and this old timer certainly knows how to do it.
May 19, 2002 at 19:12 #99220the worst in one word is thompson
May 20, 2002 at 09:26 #99222Eh Meshaheer????? Irish commentators are boring………………I take it you have’nt heard Dessie Scahill then!!?!? The King of Irish commentators. Think Holt is superb……………I dont like McGrath,if a horse goes a head by a lenght its "carearing away!!.
May 20, 2002 at 09:38 #99223What was the name of the old boy who used to do all the BBC radio commentaries? I think he might have died in the last couple of years. He was dire, you never had any idea of what was actually happening in the race from his descriptions.<br>Anyway I remember about 15 or so years ago he was commentating on a big race live on the radio and as the race reached the closing stages he had whipped himself up into his usual frenzy as three horses fought out the finish. Then suddenly with about a furlong to go he emitted a sort of strangulated squawk, followed by a good fifteen seconds of silence. We were just speculating what had happened, (heart attack, strangled by an unknown assailant, fallen of the top of the stand etc.) when suddenly he pipes up with the result and the usual ridden by, trained by, owned by stuff. No explanation was proffered as to what had happened either to him or in the race itself.
May 20, 2002 at 09:50 #99224just to agree with Aidan on the Dessie Scahill issue. He is miles ahead of Tony o hehir who in fairness makes fewer mistakes than most. He manfully tried to mop up the mess made by hamner at Aintree.
anyone who heard dessie scahill call dawn Run home would not dare say that he is emotionless.Holt is probably the best of the english with mcgrath way overrated. Goode was long gone when they removed teh number 1 post from him at C4.
May 20, 2002 at 09:51 #99227The commontator at Newbury last Friday was the consistently dreadful John Hickman. The man is obviously living in a time warp as he shouted Rag Trade home.<br>The other two worst race callers are Jonathon Turner and Andy Orkney. Turner’s inabilty to call a tight finish is outstanding and Orkney is just overwhelmingly dull.
My personal favourites are Mark Johnson and Martin Harris. John Hunt is pretty good but his constant arse-licking can get extremely annoying.
May 20, 2002 at 13:51 #99228The official story from Channel 4 was that GG requested to be given a less conspicuous role – he backed down from the no.1 post himself, rather than being pushed
May 20, 2002 at 17:24 #99231How many million times per race does Tommo say ‘Taking closer order’??? Too bloody many
May 22, 2002 at 09:38 #99232The commentators I like are those that do more than simply recite the order of the horses in running but also remark on how they are travelling. Jim McGrath scores very highly in this regard. The South African who does the commentaries at Santa Anita is also excellent.

Not as many as he asks ‘Whose going to get there?'<br>and ‘Thatrs a photo’
May 22, 2002 at 19:39 #99234I don’t know how many of you have heard him…but the fella who commentates for SIS on the Sounth African racing is mental….I have the ‘pleasure’ of listening to him every day…SA racing is dire at the best of times, but the way he calls a race, you’d think it was being run at warp speed…the pillock
May 23, 2002 at 17:23 #99236The BBC showed a race from France (of course a recording!) and McGrath said the horse was "careering away" when he won by about 2 L. I think it was Act One. Surely careering away reminds me of Halling in the Juddmonte or some horse that can really careeeeer away!
On the USA front, don’t know his name but he called the 2000 KY Derby (F Pegasus) and when the field turn in it was : "DOOOWWWN THE STRETCH THEY COME IN THE DUUURRRBY!"
Classic stuff, real enthusiasm.
