It’s not a great advert for racing because it’s not real racing as it’s meant to be.
And with that attitude, racing will die.
August 8, 2010 at 00:41 #311620I must say the Shergar Cup has grown on me. OK, it’s the ******* child of the guy who sent racing on its headlong course to oblivion, but we shouldn’t hold its parentage against it.
Thinking more about this, it seems that they are trying to give it a quiet burial. What other explanation can there be for these colours? Nobody could have designed them with positive intentions surely? Not even some of the brain donors that run racing.
It’s lost it’s BBC coverage and much of its prize money. What’s the lure any more for jockeys in countries with proper racing to fly over? It must be increasingly difficult to get them to come.
It’s a shame. As much as I hated the reserves and much of the nonsense, at least they made an effort, it drew in the crowds and the drawing of jockeys by lots was a massive plus for integrity. Paul Scotney should come out and voice his support for the concept.
August 8, 2010 at 06:30 #311644I sent Nick Smith a text yesterday saying that whoever came up with these colours should be shot.
In fairness, he said that they had tried to register much simpler plain colours but had run into loads of red-tape with "cherished" colours and the like with weatherbys – and what they ended up with as a compromise was this convoluted mess…
Think they are trying to get special dispensation to have much simpler silks next year.
August 8, 2010 at 07:01 #311646Despite the stick the Shergar Cup gets, I’ve always enjoyed going to it. It’s not often I complain, but my enjoyment of the day was totally spoilt by the colours. Some of the customers who were there, do want to follow the horses, & the colours made it very difficult.
The attendance was good, and in fairness there was loads of other good things going on. The colours, as far as I’m concerned, are an attempt to dumb it down too far. You had people supoorting the reds or the greens (which is actually quite nice for the children). It may be the intention of the racecourse to make it the ultimate team event. I doubt if I will go to this meeting again.
I don’t buy this excuse of the course getting caught up in Wetherbys/BHA red tape though, however true it may be. Someone has had to make a consious decision to choose (& then approve) these colours, & that was a poor decision.
August 8, 2010 at 08:37 #311654it was hardly the ryder cup !! i couldn’t tell the difference between the european blue silks and the rest of the world black silks . it was hopeless for betting in running too . no wonder bbc and channel 4 didnt want it .
