Fair comment from this chap?
I really wouldn’t know – the only time I ever go out it’s to go racing or Pointing.

Not sure where this figure comes from. I assume he must include the cheapest enclosures where you usually see very little of the action (no paddock, well away from the winning post etc) or sometimes nothing at all. Often people there never see a horse. The big meetings don’t have so much of a problem attracting racegoers (that said, I am sure the Gordon enclosure at Goodwood has sold out in the past yet tickets were still available for both the Goodwood Cup & Sussex Stakes days the other day). The lesser meetings may well be good value compared to other comparable events but who wants to stand on concrete steps and watch 3 & 4 runner races while being charged £5.64 for a pint & £2.35 for water? I haven’t been to any of the non-racing events cited but I have been to the tennis at Eastbourne. I’ve seen the Williams sisters, Djokovic, Cameron Norrie etc etc. We can bring our own food & booze and water is provided for free! Best value sporting event I ever attended was the under 19’s (or 20s?) Rugby World Cup at the Amex in Brighton. England V France in the final. Just after the Bataclan attack so all very emotional. £10, reasonably priced pint of Harveys (which we could drink in our seats in a civilised fashion, none of this necking it down at half time like at the football). The women’s football Euro match was also highly affordable. I gave up booking as I got the hump with the Byzantine booking system and now regret it as it was a cracker!

Not sure like is being compared with like here, although they have tried by separating festivals. Wimbledon and golf – one of only four majors, British GP – only about 22 GPs worldwide in a season. They are going to attract higher prices.
There’s all sorts of tinpot sport going on every weekend, the class 6 handicap equivalent if you will, how does that compare?
July 24, 2022 at 20:04 #1608409In the last two weeks, I have paid £10 for a ticket for County Championship cricket match and £20 for a day at a European Tour golf tournament.
Both much better value than something like £20 or more for a meeting of maiden races and poor handicaps.
July 24, 2022 at 20:24 #1608412The T20 cricket attendances have been down this year because the ECB in their infinite wisdom scheduled the tournament earlier in the season, whereas in previous years it was during the school holidays. The ECB is determined to give priority to “The Hundred”, despite no one else having a good word to say about it.
July 24, 2022 at 20:43 #1608415I think its just folk havent got the disposable income they used to have. Petrol still £1.90 round my way and in my local a pint has gone up by 15% in the last year. Folk have 8 to 10% less in their pockets and until prices come well done then the crisis in racing will continue. Paid £100 for a springsteen ticket and they are now 4 times that for ones left Folk will go for special events but with wimbledon crowds down the crisis in hospitality is everwhere.
July 24, 2022 at 20:45 #1608416Don’t get me started on the hundred.

July 25, 2022 at 19:04 #1608545In recent weeks I’ve seen the Stones for £115, Roger Daltrey for £85, £20 for the opening day and £25 for the final day of a European Tour Golf event, and havehad no plan to go anywhere near a racecourse though I might just be tempted to go to York to see Baaeed in the flesh.
Would find it irresistible to fork out the same again for those concerts even though I can’t really afford to (affordibility checks for concerts hmmm) and given the age of Daltrey and Jagger you could well say a fool and his money are easily parted!
As for the Golf – what a bargain because once you’ve seen the showcase names live you just as much enjoy seeing those regular, hardy, middling European Tour regulars.
July 29, 2022 at 20:16 #1609391Well this is definitely part of the problem. Chatting to a woman at Goodwood who had just cancelled her Ascot membership because she couldn’t stand the drunks. Doubt she’s the only one.

But I expect the track was expecting to have more than 12 runners in the consolation sprint.
Newmarket tomorrow has just 45 runners across 7 races, with 19 of them being in the first 2 races. It does not look like a very inspiring card for a Saturday at a premier track.
July 29, 2022 at 22:01 #1609404Outside of the July Cup Meeting itself the Newmarket July course doesn’t half have some run-of-the-mill stuff.

It’s the fastest five furlong thrash in the country !
It’s going downhill 👎July 30, 2022 at 04:58 #1609444Trundle Hill has looked rather sparsely populated this week.
I seem to remember it being quite busy the day ‘our Derek’ made his trip.

You mean you are not looking forward to the Grey Horse Handicap?!
August 1, 2022 at 22:32 #1609796I am Cork that’s my favourite race on the July Course.
These last two meetings on the July Course have been abysmal for the number of runners in each race and I couldn’t justify the £50 in petrol the 95 mile round trip would cost me even though I am a Member.
Like the lady Tonge was talking to at Goodwood I am also seriously considering not renewing my Membership next year and just going to the main events..Craven, Guineas, July Cup, Grey Horse Race Cambridgeshire, Ceserawitch and Future Champions although at around £50-60 Premier entry for each of these meetings it just might work out better to keep my Membershio that is if they don’t raise the price too high for 2023 but I’m not holding my breath that it will be less than £500 and in this economic climate they could be set to lose a lot of Members with a move like that.
Racing has changed so much over the years and all the lovely old characters have disappeared. People seem more interested in taking selfies of themselves than the horses and many arrive as the racing is ending for the after racing entertainment.
