The favorite in yesterday’s Maryland Hunt Cup, Coal Dust collided with a stroller at the entry to the paddock before the race (nevermind the ten billion "NO STROLLERS OR DOGS ALLOWED" signs around there). He reared and flipped, fracturing a hind leg and was euthanized on the spot. An 11-year-old gelding by Miner’s Mark, Coal Dust won the 2009 Maryland Grand National and finished 2nd in the 2008 Maryland Hunt Cup, along with numerous wins in allowance company. He was a stalwart on the timber circuit for years, and will surely be missed.
