Ivanjica,
The Timeform Annual for 1961 (I unfortunately don’t have the 1962 Annual) shows Display as owned by Lady Granard, and the photo of her (Display not Lady G) winning the National Stakes at Sandown clearly shows (as much as a b&w photo ever can) the black with red stars and red cap that you would expect for this owner.July 12, 2013 at 20:59 #445524Thanks ENE, one less to get. The Breedon Book Of Horse Racing threw in the "red herring" of "Mrs B…". I should have checked the 1962 Sporting Chronicle Form Book, where the owner is clearly stated as "Beatrice, Lady Granard". Thanks to all of you for putting me right on that one.
Not the first mistake in the Breedon’s Coronation Stakes list – the 1901 winner Bella Gallina is misspelt (they have the second name as Galliana). Made the Google detective work harder than necessary. Breedon have the owner simply as "R Walker". In the 1905 Ruffs Guide there are two gentlemen listed – one is Reid Walker the other Robert Walker.
Once I had noticed the spelling mistake and googled Reid Walker + Bella Gallina, bingo! His silks were "Sea Green" by the way.
July 12, 2013 at 23:03 #445544Digging deeper with 1957 Toro, the Breedon Book has "W R Johnstone" as owner (which I presume is Rae Johnstone by the way) whereas the following site has the Aga Khan as the owner: http://www.galopp-sieger.de/galoppsiege … z=EAsCorSt.
Ironically the following article by John Randall of all people backs up the Aga Khan being the owner:
http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Horse+Rac … 0166296499I suspect this is another error on the part of the Breedon Book – thats three in one race. Worrying as how many errors are there in the other races??
July 13, 2013 at 09:26 #445575Page 20 of today’s Racing Post invites readers to ask their team of "backroom girls and boys and hardened hacks" any question about racing.
Should be interesting to see if they can source our missing colours. Maybe we should draw up the list on here and one of us submit it.
I am happy to do the email to the RP. Will post my missing colours up here later.
July 14, 2013 at 13:07 #445661Ivanjica , re 1887 Florentine Lord Calthorpe……………
…. 1888 Oaks & Leger winner , Seabreeze was owned by 5th Baron Calthorpe and I got " Blue , Red slvs , Black cap " from a book about the history of York and Doncaster racecourses by Jack Fairfax-Blakeborough. Bet it’s the same one as opposed to Raciana’s Blue White cap from nearly 20 years earlier.
Will post the ones I need soon but as they’re for the Irish & French classics , not too hopeful and unfair to include them really. ( appreciate your offer to e-mail the RP – ta. )
However , some easy ones for you folks regarding Grand National runners. Just haven’t stumbled upon a racecard for sale for 83, 88 & 89 but some older ones to get your teeth into. Hope some of the old newspaper pullouts are handy. A couple are one the few I missed keeping myself and the other year was where I kept an early RP pullout and it’s rubbish – colours are either wrong or mis-printed.

That’s off the top of my head, might be the odd wrong cap, and my interpretation of the colour might be a bit "off", but that’s about the "flavour" of them.
July 17, 2013 at 12:18 #445869Agree with VtoC about 1988 except
Pollys Pal x belts are described as Maroon, and
Tullamarine jacket as Emerald green
1983
Delmoss – check capCol. Christy – black armlets as well
Keengaddy – pink cap
Aerogel boy – GREY diamond on body and cap
Monty Python – Blue sleeves, yellow cap, blue star
That’s it – GOLD stars on body, white star on blue cap
And very pedantic but
Memford is Emerald Green
Monty Python royal blue
Williamson DARK green
July 17, 2013 at 20:23 #445890Brilliant , many thanks for those.
"off the top of your head" – imagine if you put your mind to it – incredible.
"pedantic" – pedantic is good , we’re all keen to get these right.
will endeavour to solve the 2 from 1963 and will post my missing ones soon,
cheers All

July 21, 2013 at 19:25 #446171From the Daily Express 1963 Grand national:
MOYRATH (Mrs RL Johnson) – WHITE, RED sleeves, quartered cap
COLLEGE DON (mrs I Watts) – RED YELLOW hoops and spots on cap
The latter are the same colours as the trainer of College Don – Bill Watts (WC Watts) so I assume she was his wife.
July 21, 2013 at 21:44 #446179Re-Numerate in 1989 i’m pretty sure the actual colours worn on the day were something like light blue and pink or purple chevrons
July 21, 2013 at 22:50 #446180I’m not proud Isinglass As for the caps, always get the odd one wrong, and fully expected to be pulled up for my "interpretation" of the colours.
ps didn’t even notice that with Numerate. The colours were Purple, Lilac chevron, White sleeves…….with Purple and Lilac being my impression only
July 22, 2013 at 18:40 #446232thanks All , that’s me sorted for all runners in the Grand National 1962 – todate .
Not sure why I started but it got addictive as I know you’ll appreciate !!
Anyway , will look for a new challenge soon but as mentioned earlier , here’s an update on a couple I’ve found and more worryingly , those I’m stuck with. Really need an Irish "anorak" to jump aboard – that’s assuming none of you folks are from across the water.
Irish Derby 1917 FIRST FLIER JJ Parkinson white red spots & cap
Irish Derby 1919 LOCH LOMOND Miss E Cowhy crimson chocolate cap
Still to get – but not confident of success. Have added a "clue" or two but hasn’t helped me.

I.July 22, 2013 at 21:05 #446250Interesting to note or not as the case may be that The Lady’s Masters colours in 83 were down as Green with a Black hoop ,in fact the Green was so dark on the day that Peter O’Sullivan got him mixed up with Hallo Dandy at one point ,also seem to remember him mentioning this as they were milling round ,milling round eh boys does that not get the butterflies going
July 22, 2013 at 22:28 #446254Numerate is interesting… may have been bought by "Malcolm F Giles" just before the race and ran in his colours??
