Thanks for that VtC. I’m shoulder to shoulder with you on the work thing.
Duncreggan was on my shortlist for that. He’s one of the few runners I’ve never been able to ascribe colours to. The footage used in the ‘Champions’ film has been quite helpful in getting most of the others though!
While we’re here, I may as well be cheeky and ask if you’ve got the colours for That’s It and Hot Tomato? I think they’re the only ones I haven’t got.
December 13, 2011 at 12:08 #382465No probs OA.
I’ve always had That’s It in my head as light blue, with 3 diagonal yellow squares, pretty unusual design! I’d have to dive into my loft to check whether that’s the case 100%, I know the racecard I had, had that design! Might have been stars or spots on the day, I was too distracted at the thought of Venture to Cognacs imminent victory

Hot Tomato was yellow, dark green star, and sleeves, yellow cap…………
the more I think about That’s It, I’m pretty confident it was stars
.
December 14, 2011 at 09:26 #382604Latics fan – I was asking about this upthread as there were a few from the b/w era I did not know. If you PM me, I have a word doc with the written versions of the colours which i can send.
I’ve PMd you, OA (although it still is in my outbox – I don’t think it moves till you view it)
December 14, 2011 at 13:28 #382629Latics, you should have a message.
And thanks again VtC!

Sorry, me again
Just seen your update on That’s It VtC. I have another link that might be helpful, this time a snippet from the Champions film.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUI0CEDn … re=related
At ten seconds in, we see Gerry Newman (Carrow Boy) pulling down his goggles. Behind him we see a jockey seemingly in light blue with orange stars. Do you (or anyone else?) know if that’s That’s It’s jockey (Gordon Holmes?)
Thanks in advance..
December 20, 2011 at 19:01 #383430Yeah, that’s him OA, glad I plumped for stars instead of squares after that. Ps did you catch Hot Tomato in that clip?
December 21, 2011 at 12:14 #383526Nice one VtC, yeah, I can see Hot Tomato now. Never registered before!
Have to say that seeing those Champions clips has put me in mind to grill you about the 1981 Grand National colours…but I think I’ll hold off for now!
What I do find interesting is that the Champions film-makers did seem to have a stab at some authenticity in the colours of the ‘acting’ jockeys they filmed. This applies to the also-rans, as well as the main players.
We can see they have the Brod Munro-Wilson colours for Coolishall, the pink with black spots, which I think was Peter Scudamore on Cheers, and the blue with white spots, which I think was Three of Diamonds. There’s also briefly somone playing Linda Sheedy, in the correct colours, I think. Granted, they’ve played a bit fast and loose with the fate of those colours in the actual race, but you can’t have everything.
What I can’t gauge is to whether many more of the acting jockeys are in genuine colours or not.
December 21, 2011 at 15:27 #383552Hey OA, you’re spot on with those 3 from the film. I haven’t seen it for years, but from memory, you’re right, they did make a decent stab at authenticity! From memory, there’s a runner which is black, with green hoops, and a White cap, though I might be wrong, anyway that doesn’t apply to any of the 81 runners, those were carried by a horse called Armagnac Princess in the 80’s. No doubt her owners probably lent the colours. That’s probably the case with some of the other runners in the film. I’ll check it out on You Tube tonight.
As for any other queries from 81, fire away, I’m at work but should be able to get back to you.

Hi Slew, good to hear from you. I will have a look at what I have for the Dewhurst and St James’ Palace and get back to you. Do you have the colours for the St James’ going back to 1969 as well? ie the search begins from 1968.
Cheers

Isinglass and Invanjica have been stalwarts and put a lot of time and effort into this thread and appreciate everything they have done.
It’s very unique and may I say bloody brilliant.
