One thing does lead to another . I reckon the Baroda business follows this path ……possibly !
St Leger winner Sayajirao in 1947 was owned by Maharaja of Baroda and he raced in light terra cotta & crimson. His wife ( Maharanee ) raced in powder blue & maroon and owned the ’52 Gold Cup winner Aquino. Can confirm her colours from the ’53 Derby racecard.
Wikipedia ( love it or loathe it ) says Maharaja died in 1968 and in the Benson & Hedges book of ’73 the Maharanee now is registered with the terra cotta & crimson so she must have swapped to his.
Maybe …. ??
Maharaja’s father was called Sayajirao – didn’t know that did you ?
Following are some earlier Gold Cup winners I’m struggling with.
1908 The White Knight Col TYL Kirkwood
1904 Throwaway F Alexander
1903 Maximum II M. J de Bremond
1896 Love Wisely Mr H Bass
1819 Anticipation Mr Lechmere
Anyone interested in the earlier ones I have identified ( or so I think anyway ) ?
Cheers all
I.April 15, 2011 at 19:05 #350415Didnt the Maharaja of Baroda also own My Babu? Saw a picture of his silks and there were 3 chevron hoops on the body and three chevrons on sleeves and a chevron on the cap.
Going out on a limb with Constant silks. I’ll take a punt and say WHITE, BLACK HOOP and ARMLETS, WHITE CAP. Makes sense considering the film evidence and the race book which describes his silks as white, black hoop, white cap. SOLVED!April 16, 2011 at 00:19 #350472Hi Slew, yes My Babu did indeed run in the same Terra Cotta and Crimson colours.
I noticed as the horses enter the straight in the 1951 Ascot GC, there is a horse in light dark hoop/armlets and dark cap? Is it possible two horses ran that year carrying the Constant silks, and the one fading out of contention carries the first clours (with the red cap)?
I guess a racecard is what we really need now. Really annoyingly I only have the 1950 one (screen dump from EBay!).

"Cerise, m. cerclées blanc & cerise, t. blanche" which I think is Cerise, white hooped slvs, whote cap – source France Galop. Not sur about the others – what sources do you already have (to try and avoid duplication? Raciana, Ruffs 1921 I guess? 1948 and 1964 Ruffs? And racecards presumably?
Anyway 1 down 4 to go.
Anyone interested in the earlier ones I have identified ( or so I think anyway ) ?
YES PLEASE!!!!!!
April 16, 2011 at 00:49 #3504791896 Love Wisely Mr H Bass
Bit more digging has unearthered the fact that according to the Breedon Book of Records "W" Bass was the registered owner, and his colours were Yellow Green Sleeves and Cap (bought Sceptre off Bob Siever and full name is Sir William Arthur Hamar Bass so I guess your "H" Bass comes from the "Hamar" part of the name?
Also, jammily just stumbled on:
1904 Throwaway F ALEXANDERDark Blue, White Sleevs
Source: 1896 Grand National Card, "Retiarius" Horse No.13 in Sefton Park Plate.
Trust that levae sus with two to get now?

That horse you mentioned was Comte Edouard Decazes LACADUV which carried the colours of WHITE, RED HOOP on body and sleeves, BLACK cap.
Cheers

I.April 17, 2011 at 12:02 #350742Thats brilliant isinglass. really appreciated.
I note you too have a braid on Alfred Cox – I thin the racecards dont have a braid but the pictorial evidence does.
thx
April 18, 2011 at 07:45 #350876That’s a Group 1 performance Isinglass, well done, super effort,
Where did you see a pic of Alfred Cox aka ‘Mr Fairie’? All the jpeg racecards i have have his colours as White, orange sleeves and cap.April 18, 2011 at 18:27 #350996Slewman , try the following "google image" searches – worldwide , not UK.
1917 gay crusader derby OR
1910 lemberg derby OR
1909 bayardo leger
either photo or cig. card evidence should appear as an early option
cheers
I.April 18, 2011 at 23:05 #351042I am farily sure I have also seen pictorial evidence knocking around depicting the Duke Of Westminster’s Yellow jacket also carrying a braid.
April 19, 2011 at 23:00 #351186Hi Isinglass and Invanjica.
The photo evidence clearly shows Bayardo, owned by Alfred Cox aka Mr Fairie carried a braid on the jacket. Despite all the official jpeg racecards I have of Cox’s runners his silks are described as white, orange sleeves and cap. Also Lord Woolavington’s colours seemed inaccurate as well, stating white, one black hoop, red cap gold tassel, when in the b/w photos showing one black armlet on the sleeves also. With the Duke of Westminster’s colours (Yellow, Black Cap), the possibility of a braid could be true. I know when he passed on his wife the Duchess of Westminster raced her horses in Yellow, narrow black belt and cap with gold tassel, as I have film evidence to show Arkle and her 1980’s Grand National winner Last Suspect raced in those colours.April 20, 2011 at 15:42 #351266Hi Isinglass and Invanjica.

I think in some of the Woolavington/Macdonald-Buchanan depictions/descriptions the tassel is missing, however I think it is safe to assume the tassel was an integral part of those silks.
The following link to a painting of 1883 Derby hero Shotover seems to show a braid on the Duke Of Westminsters silks.
April 21, 2011 at 18:59 #351451Hi Folks , the Westminster braid can be taken as read , should have been included in my previous posting – got lazy.
It’s everywhere you look , from Emil Adam’s paintings of Ormonde and Fred Archer and of Flying Fox and Morny Cannon. Also , 1910 Taddy cig. card of jockey Herbert Randall – description on the back mentions braid , buttons & tassels – very subtle.
Anyway moving on , but on a related matter ….. Hugh Lupus Grosvenor was 1st Duke of Westminster – equine "Hugh Lupus" won 1955 Irish 2000 Guineas , owned by the then Duke’s daughter I believe , Lady Ursula Vernon.
Obvious question coming up – any idea of her colours please ?
Yes , I have started looking at Irish classics !!
Happy Easter All.
April 22, 2011 at 00:47 #351493Hi Isinglass
The Irish Classics, especially the Derby will prove a challenge. Not sure about you but I can only go back to 1960’s with colours and info.
To all have a safe and Happy Easter. -
