Binocular was mightily impressive at Aintree on a flat track, turning the tables decisively on the horse who defeated him at Cheltenham, Celestial Halo.
Should Binocular prove that he acts round Prestbury Park, then he could be the one they all have to beat come March. However, there remains a nagging doubt (for the moment anyway) that the hill, and a lack of stamina, might just be his undoing.
We shall see.
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
November 21, 2008 at 16:53 #191078Fists – Apart from your famous instincts (:D) what piece of form tells you Binolular is 28lb better than Sentry Duty? Handicapper has him 8lb ahead and i personally can’t see how that much in it currently.
As i’ve previously said Sentry Duty has beaten Celestial Halo the same distance as Binocular has, and was giving 3lb in to the bargain. I keep referring to Celestial Halo as the Aintree race seems to be the basis of Binoculars current position in the betting.
As previously stated – this could all change and Binocular certainly has scope for a big improvement, but Sentry Duty does also.
November 21, 2008 at 21:39 #191144To be fair the first time I saw Sentry Duty win I was really impressed. I think it was about a week before Cheltenham when they were still messing Nicky H about and Binny wasn’t sure to be running anywhere, I looked at betting Sentry Duty but what put me off was he was very long odds.
I was very suprised and thought I must be overrating the horses win. As it turned out he shortned in the market but run bsolutely nowhere in the Supreme and Binny finished second to Capt CB.
So I can see what you see in the horse and perhaps he can improve but I would think he’s more likely to ained at the Tote Gold Trophy or something similar.
I read an interview or article this morning with Nicky Henderson. Siad something about his string arm in the CH with Binocular, Punjabi and possibly Aigle D’or. They are prestty much rated in that order by NH and Sentry Duty doesn’t get a mention.
Horse can improve dramatically but I think he has along way to go before joining that trio.
The weight thing I base on Blue Bajan being asked to give Sentry Duty 12 lbs the other day. I would suspect Binocular would have to be giving a fair bit of weight to BB……..I don’t pay much attention to these things so if I’m wrong then I can accept that but I can’t accept SD being in the same class as Binny.
November 21, 2008 at 21:59 #191148Point taken about Henderson being open about the order of his hurdlers skills i haven’t seen that interview to be honest.
Regarding the Blue Bajan etc – surely irrelevant as Sentry Duty proved his mark all wrong that day.
To clarify – i’m saying i’d back Sentry Duty (should they race now) currently against Binocular purely on value grounds – he would likely be a massive multiple price of Binocular. Binocular would be the most likely winner, but at a falsely short price.
November 22, 2008 at 00:13 #191173Wouldn’t bet on it PC…Early season results don’t often stand the test of time…Blue Bajan is one helluva horse and you wouldn’t know how fit Andy Turnell has him…..He absolutely bolted up in the Swinton Hurdle he finished a distance in front of Sentry Duty at Cheltehham.
Nicky’s horse are flying at the moment and a lot of the current form will look pretty silly over the next few months.
November 23, 2008 at 19:56 #191542I have been strong supported and backer of Binocular since day one, and my opinion has not changed. I rate Binocular as banker bet of meeting, and come march, you will be lucky to get 5/2 never mind 4/1.
November 23, 2008 at 20:21 #191548Welcometo TRF, Racing Insider (great name by the way!).
Are you by any chance related to someone called Fists of Fury?
Colin
November 23, 2008 at 21:53 #191568I don’t have any relations that are after timers Colin
November 25, 2008 at 22:20 #192119Eight or nine months is a long time in racing isn’t it?
Last year no 5yo could possibly win the Champion
Now we have Binocular who is a good thing in some quarters even
at this early stage of the season.
If Katchit hadn’t won last year, what price Binocular today?November 26, 2008 at 18:04 #192322He’s along way off being a good thing IMO. I said from day one he was a Champion Hurdle horse but being good enough to run in itis one thing but actually winning it is another.
He would be a good thing if Sizing Europe, Katchit, Punjabi, Crack Away Jack and Osana all went fencing..if only
He’s favourite at the moment because the others have yet to show their best form…….but he hasn’t done anything to justify that position apart from look good and show his wellbeing.
Sure I think he will win the CH but a good thing? No way
November 26, 2008 at 21:39 #192404Prior to Katchit winning last seasons renewal, there were three five year olds in forty years who won the CH.
They were Persian War-ultimately a three time winner of the race.
Night Nurse-a dual winner and placed in the race
See You Then-ultimately a three time winner of the raceDo you think we might all be underestimating the value of Katchits achievement?
November 27, 2008 at 01:06 #192471A valid point, agreed.

Seriously though, I agree of course

Another believer! .
If we get a second five year old winning the CH in consecutive seasons after only three in forty years I’ll go to the foot of our stairs and eat my hat!!Binocular is hyped, the Supreme form is nothing but average.
Katchit is special.Seriously though, I agree of course
December 3, 2008 at 13:07 #193996My advice to you is go and buy a chocolate hat
It looks like Crack Away Jack will run again soon as his trainer reckons he needs more experience. I think someone should have a word in her ear and tel her it’s her that needs more experience. She has even said she wold have run him in the Fighting Fifth if they had opened up the entries again.
Surely a little more time and a rest and bring him back in the new year would serve his chances better……Binny 1 run, Sizing Europe 1 run, Punjabi 0 runs, Osana 0 runs and good old Katcht 3 runs.
I doubt if any other trainer would have 3 runs into a young horse like him by this time of the season.
Could it be she is being impatient and losing the plot a bit?
