I can’t help thinking Lord Snooty…just broadcasting to George Osborne and his mates…a ‘toff’ presenter

Ah yes, there we go. I think I now understand perfectly.

You asked a question and I offered an opinion. Sorry that you didn’t like it and felt the need to resort to your oh so predictable line of sarcasm.

Perhaps you would like to consider how many ‘toff’ presenters there are on all the mainstream channels? I suspect it would be a very short list. Just coincidence?

Fortunately, as far as Luck is concerned racing likes to exist in its own little bubble.

Firstly, I wasn’t being sarcastic. If anything I was being very literal.

Secondly, the question I asked was why people thought he was "so bad" i.e. at presenting. You didn’t remotely answer this. As I said, I think he’s fluent, chatty and professional which are pretty much all the skills needed for the job.

And thirdly, I don’t judge people on where they came from, I judge them on how well they do the job. This applies in all walks of life. For example, I have no idea about Tanya Stephenson’s background but it’s patently obvious to me that her presenting skills are poor.

I certainly don’t separate people into ‘toffs’ and ‘others’ as it seems so demeaning and childish. Aside from your spurious ‘class’ issues then, why do you feel Nick Luck is such a bad frontman for C4 racing?

We will probably end up with just racing on Saturdays on terrestrial with the midweek being on atr and at the races. For the racing nuts it will be either get atr or racing uk or both. Since dropping Big Mac, thommo etc it’s neither entertaining or a racing programme. Do one or the other as the current set up is dying a very slow and lingering death.

Just Rishi to go now, a couple of new faces with the right chemistry who just blend in to make the horses the most important thing, and the programme might start to gain more viewers.

How do you know that and what is it based on?

When they were trying to regain some rights in 2009, the BBC put the estimated number of cricket ‘followers’ (based on website hits) at 12 million (20%+ of the nation, excluding very young children) which would surely dwarf that of racing. There’s also mass coverage whenever England are playing, particularly on the news, which obviously implies a broad following.

The telling stat though is the £260 million SKY paid for four year’s coverage in 2017. Wonder what they’d pay for racing’s rights?

Racing has a knowledgeable and enthusiastic following but my own experience as a fan of both sports is that I know a huge amount more cricket fans than racing fans (in fact I hardly know any racing fans!).

My overarching point was that Ricky may well be right about racing disappearing off our terrestrial screens if cricket can.

    Mike

I find the opposite betlarge, I never speak to anyone about cricket and find very little interest in it out and about. Are they discussing it in pubs and betting shops throughout the country? If not, where?

Some consider cricket moving to Sky could have a serious negative effect on the number of followers of the sport in the years to come.
When we were growing up, all the cricketers were household names, both county and international ones, now I’ve never even heard of some who play for England. The same goes for boxing.

Most people wouldn’t be surprised if racing was cut back on terrestrial television but there will still be a place for the big races on there and although both leave a lot to be desired, how many sports have 2 specialist television channels?

Yes, I would agree that moving over to pay-TV has shrunk their wider profile, but football, cricket and both codes of rugby were stuck with indifference from the BBC/ITV or a large pay cheque dangled in front of them from the likes of SKY.

It would be interesting to ask a thousand people who the England captains at the various sports are and who the Champion jockey is!

I do think that sport has become less visible as a result although some of that may have happened anyway. The overall ratings for

    anything

on TV have plummeted in recent decades due to a glut of new channels and an increase in alternative leisure activities.

Racing is unique in being funded primarily through betting rather than rights and sponsorship so it may not be a total disaster if it moved solely onto ATR/RUK. However,

    any

terrestrial coverage is surely worth hanging onto.

Since Channel 4 took over all the terrestrial coverage there has been a lot of discussion on forums, even Facebook, about the delivery of the programme. I am a member of several equine groups on Facebook, one of which is mainly grass roots racing industry members. The overall feeling is obvious, that the new format isn’t working. Lack of horses and the "screen", cold presentation skills and Nick Luck, being other major factors. I am amazed that the producers are not doing more to address these issues; do they read these forums? These people represent the nucleus of their audience. I for one watch far less racing now and I thought some of the old presenters were terrible too.
I know a lot of commenters on here a bettors and have RUK, but it is so expensive it is beyond the reach of many racing fans. If terrestrial racing coverage goes it will follow showjumping in becoming a complete minority sport. What a shame that will be.

They need to get more guests on like sir mark Prescott. I could listen to his stories all day, the way he speaks about Newmarket it must be fabulous to work in that environment.. Another thing they could do is have regular pieces on the great horses and the horses the public have taken to their hearts. For me horses like soba, moorestyle,Stravinsky and still my favourite alleged. I can’t believe they dont at least look for what would attract the audience but I think in these days of so many types of media tv is now being marginalised anyway.

Four things I can see happening if ch4 racing leaves our screens:
    1) betting turnover will drop
    2)sponsorship will drop
3)big races will move back to mid week as there will be no need to stuff them all on a Saturday
4)ruk will cost twice as much

Excellent on all 4 fronts. I won’t have RUK and watch it in the bookies.
    Ah the good old days

Bring back the ITV 7 type coverage, race every 15 minutes and cut out all the waffle and filler and C4 racing ratings might rise as people watch the show to see their bets run and not much else. Tie the Scoop 6 up with it again and cut down on the endless presenters and wafflers and save on their wages and it might become a bit more popular.

We might not all like C4 Racing, but it’s still a good deal classier than this example of Aussie cricket coverage:

Happy days , I wish all 4 happen ….especially number 3 …the amount of racing crammed into a saturday is simply inane

As for Ruk ….there are more ways of viewing if you simply look into it ……

Bring back some sanity in the post Bittar era …..(dont hold your breath though !!!)

Presumably a Twenty20 with Woody and Buzz opening the batting and Elvis providing the in-depth analysis :)

I agree about returning to the good old days of ITV7, I’m sure that’s what all bookmakers would want anyway. However this would probably lead to more complaints about not showing horses in the paddock, but most of all the people in charge of Channel 4 Racing never listen to criticism (they still show race distances in meters – ??, even RUK don’t do that) so I can’t see anything changing for the better.

How on earth is that a good thing? So the only way to watch the big races is take time off work or pay a fortune to subscribe to RUK?

Best way to marginalise the product even further is to hide the best bits!
