Pinatubo’s three year old career did not live up to the hype – but it does tend to get forgotten that he did win a Group 1 and was placed in a few others. He was still a good horse but the others caught him up.

I am impressed by City of Troy but reminded of the hype about Auguste Rodin and that nobody had heard of Paddington this time last year. CoT looks like the finished article (albeit that article is top class). Others have won good races while still running green and looking unfurnished though do next year’s competition might be another league. I wouldn’t bet against CoT in the Guineas but wouldn’t back him (or anything else) at such short prices for Guineas or Derby at this stage. Well done those who got more realistic odds. He’ll probably win but very poor value.

If you think he looks the finished article then you need your eyes testing  He has plenty of filling out to do. This guy is nothing like august roden, his times and style of racing are miles apart

In terms of attitude he is already a professional racehorse. Of course he will mature physically, as most of them will. Agree that he looks like something special but a lot can happen in 6 months and I still think the prices are crazy.

I just worry if his non tiredness will eventually catch up with him.

Everything so far has shown him to be very straightforward , is expect him to handle the day fine , he’ll put the rest of the field to sleep

With respect CAS; if anything I’d say his runner-up spots to Palace Pier and Persian King were better form than his Jean Prat Group 1 victory. Not that any of the three year old form was as good as his National Stakes victory. Horses don’t need to “live up to the “hype” in order to “train on”, just run to the same form rating it achieved as a two year old. Pinatubo didn’t.

It’s not just that “others caught up with him”. Pinatubo was small and smaller horses are known to have a greater chance of not training-on: Not making the normal physical improvement required for his rating to stay the same. :rose:

Point is – the type of horse City Of Troy is, there is not much chance of him failing to train-on and a much greater chance he’ll make a better three than two year old.

Little Big Bear got an RPR of 121 after demolishing his rivals in the Phoenix. Look how that worked out. Native Trail was 120. Pinatubo was 128 and ended up a major disappointment also.

City of Troy was phenomenal the other day but it’ll mean nothing if he can’t back it up next year. I’m done getting excited over 2yo’s.

Everything points to cot training on but you can never guarantee it. Henry longfellow could develop past him. His breeding very much suggests he will be much better at 3. In a way its doesn’t matter what horses do at 2 bar for stud values. Paddington a case in point. It’s all in the air till they do it the first week in May.
Time will tell. I’m looking forward to seeing Henry as much as cot. Roll on next May.

    125p looks about right.
    Obviously has great potential.
Just watchd it back on RTV.
I knew some of Team Coolmore had gone on the offensive afterwards…
    Hadn’t realised quite how many.
Almost as if they’d all been given a script.

Back in 2009, St Nicholas Abbey won the Racing Post Trophy in resounding style. It elevated him to a rating of 124 and the hype that surrounded him is similar to that now for City of Troy.

AOB is a little bit hit ‘n’ miss with the 2000 Guineas (more hit than miss) and while City of Troy has looked unstoppable this year, his best performances are on softer going.
My feeling is that he might be more susceptible on faster going which brings the tough-as-nails Rosallion to the fore as worthwhile opposition.

I find next years Flat very intriguing with the hope that some other horses (whoever they might be) may appear from under the radar to make for a worthwhile 2024.

tbf Ghost; City Of Troy’s action suggests he’s got a better chance of improving his form on firmer ground than be worse on it. Although it’s true the difference a firmer surface has on stamina can make a difference… the Dewhurst is over 7f and wasn’t short of speed there. Didn’t win just by staying on either, quickened decisively.

He’ll be a different horse on quick ground. A stride analyst on twitter counted 7 lead changes on Saturday as opposed to 2 in the Superlative. Timeform gave him a speed figure of 115, though their sectionals team upgraded that by 10.

    Listen Nathan,

Aidan O’Brien always looks like that on 2000 Guineas day.

Galileos only run as a 2yo was on Oct 28 so there is a chance a top notcher hasn’t run yet. Whether they can reach the form of coy is another matter. Btw don’t remember as much hype on st Nicholas Abbey but he was one impressive 2yo. Loads can happen in 6 months so roll on May.
