Passed away in retirement aged 26. James Moffatt posted a lovely memorial on his Facebook page. R.I.P.

A great old warrior (see what I did there) and glad to learn that he had a long and happy retirement.

I actually had him e/w when he won what is now the Ultima that year, although my main bet in the race was Bensalem who was hacking when he fell two out. Still, Chief Dan George showed some real tenacity to rally to win that day, having been headed by The Package on the run-in.

I was there that day and backed him. Can still picture him in the winners enclosure. He was mentioned in my Jumping Prospects book so I’d been following him as ( I think) it pointed out that they’d found the reason why he hadn’t been running well ( I need to look it up; muscle enzyme or something). Then I had a friend in my village called Georgina who followed him, too. When some horses die a little bit of you dies too, and that’s how I feel about Chiefy. RIP

I know how you feel Moehat. These old horses stir so many memories, many totally unrelated to racing. Sounds like he had a lovely retirement though.

Looking at his race record; such fond memories of horses from that time; Hello Bud, Sa Suffit ( who never fulfilled his true potential) etc. Maybe it’s because I used to go racing so much more back then and seeing them on the tv isn’t the same as seeing them on the racetrack.

Massive for such a small yard , won 4 on the bop as a young horse at nice prices , won 9 from 50 runs and +£50.85 to a £1 stake , he’s the stuff of dreams
