Has anyone noticed that Mick Fitzgerald is booked to ride Chief Dan George at Newbury on Saturday? Interesting booking by the Moffatt team
November 27, 2007 at 18:46 #127466Didn’t Fitzy ride him when he was flattered at Aintree. Special Envoy looks very interesting at double figure odds.
November 27, 2007 at 19:48 #127472In what way was Chief Dan George flattered ? As the Racing post write up says take him out of the race and Wichita Lineman would have been hyped up beating a decent field by nearly twenty lengths. Added to the fact that his only defeat was at Cheltenham where he tweaked a muscle in his quarters I think he would have a decent chance against WL if they met again particularly on softish ground.
November 27, 2007 at 20:13 #127477My opinion is that he was flattered having been held up in a race run at an overly-strong pace. Wichita Lineman and Massini’s Maguire got into a duel too far out and I think it reflects great credit on Wichita Lineman that he stuck on as well as he did.
Regarding the race at the weekend. Getting 8 lb out off the main principals and with his wellbeing assured, Special Envoy looks a knocking bet at 10/1. SHould he really be a bigger price than Blazing Bailey who has to give him weight and ran like a corpse at Cheltenham?

DJ,
I’m certainly hoping that he wasn’t flattered at Aintree as I’ve had a decent each way bet on him at big odds for the World Hurdle.
Like you say in a later post, the 2 leaders went off at an overly strong pace at Aintree – but give credit to CDG who was the only one to take advantage. I certainly don’t think he was flattered, he just outstayed them and was the better horse on the day IMO.
A fast run World Hurdle will be right up his street if the ground is softer than good, and I can’t for the life of me think why the likes of Massimo’s and Wichita were half his odds when I placed my ante-post bet.
I never get too carried away with seasonal re-appearances so I’m not too bothered about this weekend, but I’m hoping that CDG can show enough througout the season to merit a single figure price come March. I’m quite confident that if CDG was trained by a certain Paul Nicholls, then he would already be a single figure price.

November 27, 2007 at 23:04 #127509Hi Guys
I wonder if this horse is possibly underrated by some because of the ‘unfashionable stable’ ??
November 27, 2007 at 23:17 #127511Hello Trisons Star and welcome to TRF.
To pick up on your point about CDG, I’m not sure it’s because of his stable that some doubt his class. I think people doubt him because of the fact that he was a maiden after 18 runs as recently as December (I personally remember backing him at Ayr off a mark of 110!), and as a result can’t see a horse going from OR 99 to a serious WH contender in 5 months! I have to say I side with them, and I think the Aintree form flatters CDG, although he is undoubtably a handy animal.

Friggo
Can’t see that he was flattered myself?
His RPR clearly shows he was a highly progressive horse last season, and his rating for the Sefton is only 6lbs higher than his Haydock romp 2 months earlier.
Whether that puts him within 4lbs of such as Inglis Drever is a moot point, though he certainly has the potential to be.November 28, 2007 at 03:19 #127526I was in a taxi going to Kempton today – the driver told me that an old bloke in a pub, who likes his racing gave him one horse to follow this season – CHIEF DAN GEORGE!
There you go

November 28, 2007 at 11:27 #127583the trainer said that it was the application of cheekpieces that made the difference to this horse -I’m still licking my wounds from the fact that I backed him at Cheltenham and couldn’t get a bet on when he ran at Aintree as I had to work late [got home just in time to see him win].
November 28, 2007 at 11:42 #127587I agree with you DJ, 10s Special Envoy is tasty- any race where Black Jack takes out 28% of the book has to be worth playing.

Where do you find out odds for races such as this, I looked at the race card on Sporting Life but no forecast odds were shown..
November 28, 2007 at 12:12 #127593Available on betfair. Only fixed odds firm betting on the race is Corals.

Yeah I tried easyodds, I use that site a lot, nothing was there, will check bestbetting in future too not used it before, thanks Irish Stamp, and David.
November 28, 2007 at 19:50 #127667I like CDG a lot and backed him at Cheltenham, he began his career with a guy who has trained 1 winner in the last 5 years and since joining Moffatt has improved out of all recognition. As I recall a certain M Pipe was a past master at turning other peoples donkeys into champions.
At the end of the day judge the Chief by his potential and what he achieves, not by the races he lost as a youngster.
