As previously stated, only been once, 1975, Australian Tour match, no play all day (rain, Manchester, west of Pennines etc) so never saw Lillee and Thomson.

Rain again might gift this to Aussies and retain the Ashes for them.

Why have England retained the services of that Tyke wicket keeper, who couldn’t catch a cold and has now forgotten how to bat too?

Bowl the Aussies out by lunch for under 100. Bat,declare at tea on 200,bowl them out for 90 win by an innings on day one.

Not quite as spectacular but an early breakthrough hopefully.!!

I think the last Test match I attended at Old Trafford was in the 1985 Ashes.

I have been to lots of County Championship games there when it is almost empty. It is far better when Lancashire play on outgrounds.

Unfortunately the weather does play a huge part in Manchester. It is a fact that Lancashire consistently lose more playing time due to rain than any other county. When Lancashire last won the County Championship in 2011 (their first outright win for about 70 years) they played all their home games at Aigburth in Liverpool. If they had played in Manchester they would not have won.

Having said that, I attended the 1983 World Cup semi final between England and India on a school trip. It is still one of the hottest days I can remember in this country.

‘Rain again might gift this to Aussies and retain the Ashes for them.’

In fairness to the British weather, we have done our best to hand the Ashes over ourselves by failing to convert healthy positions in the first two tests.

I can only admire Sam’s optimism!

Geography lesson for former Lancashire player Michael Atherton. He said the Open starts tomorrow in Hoylake “50 miles to the west on the Lancashire coast”.

Hoylake is officially in Merseyside but before the creation of that new metropolitan area it was in the county of Cheshire.

Don’t mess with CAS on these things.

England need to bowl Australia out today if they’re to keep the Series alive, I reckon.

Didn’t knew you were a Man Utd Supporter Chezza.

Doesn’t always rain, but Manchester is at the foot of the Pennines so gets a lot of relieve rainfall. Helps our gardens.

We now have Trams, which goes to Old Trafford.

Take a tip from Paul about the rain.

You've got to accentuate the positive.
    Eliminate the negative.
    Latch on to the affirmative.
Don't mess with mister in between.

Would you settle for 9 today and 1 in the first over tomorrow.??

I’ve been to Old Trafford a couple of times: firstly with my uncle in the early ’70s to watch a day’s play of a Roses Match, details of which have become sketchy; and secondly, the first day’s play of a West Indies – England Test in 1984, part of the ‘blackwash’ series that England lost 5-0

Gordon Greenidge and Jeff Dujon hit centuries with Viv Richards was out for next to nothing; and Botham the bowler got smashed all over the place

Greenidge, who was always an entertaining batsman, went on to make a double century. For a good many years he opened the batting for Hampshire with the great batsman Barry Richards, who never got the chance to shine at Test level due to South Africa being banned from international sport

If the weather forecast is correct it seems likely play will be seriously limited this weekend

I’m originally from Manchester, it rains all the time and it’s often said half the reason there’s so much wild nightlife in the city is because it’s too wet to ever be outdoors for long.

If you’re behind going in a Series into any Old Trafford Test you’re in big trouble.

Australia did far too well yesterday, tbh.

“Ilkla Moor Baht ‘at” Ginger Beardy Boy shut me up with that catch, though, our kid.

It’s the Old Trafford Test – it’s resurrecting the Mancunian-born Lancastrian in me!

The West Indies bowling line up at the time would have been enough to turn your whites brown
Ambrose, Walsh, Marshall, Pattinson could take heads off

Ambrose had a torrid day at Taunton playing for Northants. In those days at half time we would run on the pitch and go autograph hunting. I was the fastest and went straight for Ambrose, he just grunted at me and went marching back to the pavilion, all the other youngsters were behind me and we all followed him back with me waving my book and pen into his mid drift. He ignored it all the way back. I got back to me seat and my brother had a book full of the about 6 or 7 players including Alan Lamb…
