To be fair to Chapman, I have heard similar comments spoken by other people. In particular the phrase “flashy chestnut”, which is not really meant as a compliment.

But I think we have collectively proven that it is an unfounded prejudice. A bit like comments about people with ginger hair (sorry Ginger!).

    Nah; that one’s justified. 😂

Not sure why you are asking me, Louise; but the only true Wonder Horse was a flashy chestnut with 4 white socks

Native River and Royal Athlete Definitly Red to name a few all chestnuts didn’t do them any harm

Lol. I know who would’ve been the outsider of three in a hypothetical Champion Chase.

Are we talking about BECTIVE ABBEY?

I suspect Matt Chapman’s comment is not about horses with chestnut coats in general, but about yellow / sandy-coloured chestnuts.

As opposed to the very red-coloured chestnuts such as DEFINITLY RED.

It is sometimes said that chestnut horses can be more hot headed / sensitive. Especially chestnut mares. But otherwise there is no prejudice against chestnuts, from an ability perspective.

    Dawn Approach was very tough
I saw him live at Goodwood and shat myself. He looked like a lion
Lucky team Hannon took my advice and Toronado at long last got one over on him by going wide and leaving it as late as possible

A horse with imperfect forelegs, a parrot mouth and three white feet … the great Dancing Brave.

On another recent subject, Dancing Brave was campaigned fearlessly and ran eight times in seven months as a three year old.

Makes the current NH trainers look a bit gutless in comparison.

To be fair Gladiateur, Dancing Brave didn’t have to handle something awful like ‘soft ground.’

Native River destroys any questionable notions about chestnuts , came back from a tendon twice to win a GC , no stronger , braver horse set foot on a racecourse , here he is taking his groom to get prom …. Her date is a lucky lad

My all time four legged hero.
The first chapter of LPP’s book about him was entitled ‘A Horse of That Colour’. Prejudice against chestnuts is nothing new.

I do remember comments made back in the day about a chestnut with four white socks not being the ideal and something you should avoid when looking for a racehorse but even at my young age then, I always thought it was a bit of an old wives tale type of thing and there would always be an exception to the rule…..of which many posters on this thread have pointed out numerous examples of.
