    https://www.racingpost.com/news/latest/cheltenham-comes-under-fire-for-dropping-750-guinness-during-snooker-event/597317

Alleged uproar about Guinness being £6 a pint at a recent snooker event there as opposed to £7.50p at “the Fez.”

Now Chezza has zero conflict of interest here.

Chezza doesn’t drink Guinness (horrid, alcoholic, beverage, looks a bit like Dandelion & Burdock but isn’t).

    Chezza doesn’t attend snooker events.

Chezza doesn’t attend Cheltenham races (most overrated Jumps track in Britain) and definitely not “the Fez.”

So Chezza is uniquely well placed, as Chezza invariably is, to tell it like it is.

Anyone ever heard of the laws of supply and demand?

If you ever studied Economics, at GCSE or above, you will have done.

Vendors set prices in accordance with the supply they have and demand for it.

Anyone stupid enough to pay £7.50p, anyone stupid to even be there those four days in March, is creating demand and deserves all they get.

Boycott the Cheltenham Festival but, if it’s such crack cocaine for you that you simply have to be there, boycott the food and drink outlets.

That’s the only way to bring prices down.

Anyone caught spending more than £2 for a pint of anything shouldn’t be allowed to vote on anything, ever.

Chezza hates Hughesey, but has to agree the proprietor of Nathbet is spot on here.

Even allowing for poetic licence, is there anywhere outside Wetherspoons (Clive’s favourite) where you can buy a pint for £2?

The drinks prices are a rip off but Cheltenham is not unique. It is the same in other blue chip sporting venues.

I generally avoid drinking in racecourses unless I have a winner or two. Then at least it feels like someone else is buying.

Food is a bit more awkward. Lots of racecourses will not let you take your own food in. I have even had bottles of water confiscated. I suppose the solution is to feed up beforehand but that is not always possible if you are travelling.

“I have even had bottles of water confiscated”

They tried this on me once.
I told them that I’ve had a kidney transplant and won’t be joining any queues to be buying anything inside and to get the manager down to speak to me
they soon let me and water bottle in

The first race at Cheltenham each day of the Festival is at 1.30pm, the last race is at 5.30pm.

Even if you arrive an hour before racing and don’t leave until 6pm you are inside the venue for five and a half hours tops.

Is it really so hard for people to go without food and drink for five and a half hours?

If so, it’s the ultimate First World problem.

Eating and drinking before going racing and then again afterwards really isn’t that difficult.

And the amount saved will be like backing an extra winner for many.

Wait, you’re saying you don’t like Cheltenham ID?!

    You’ve kept that very quiet….

“Is it really so hard for people to go without food and drink for five and a half hours?”

Cheltenham under the Davies regime would be a spartan sort of place. But I suppose it would not be quite so crowded. ;-)

I assume you’re being sarcastic, sir.

It’s a regular topic of mine.

It’s a furlong from the Stands, set so far back from the run in they’re virtually located in Cheltenham town centre, to the winning post, the actual obstacles are even further away, it’s only a mile and a half circuit but it looks like it’s two miles plus at the furthest point, it’s full of Peaky Blinders wannabes and their other halves all sporting their hideous designer “winter garb,” you have to remortgage to buy a ticket for it and it’s impossible to then eat and drink there on top of that unless you’re a lifelong expert on tax evasion.

The scenic backdrop and the standard of racing is cracking, but you can see plenty of both on TV sat at home!

Yeah I was being sarcastic (apologies, lowest form of wit and all that) and I know it is a very regular topic of yours!

Some of us still enjoy it though and it does grate a bit after a while being told what an idiot you are.

Of course we could all watch it from the comfort of our own homes and save some money but you could say that about any sporting event and to be honest sitting in my living room with a can of Skol while my missus waffles on about how Suzy from the office is such a bitch doesn’t really appeal.

There are loads of things I would change about the festival. Yes, the drinks prices are scandalous for a start and a small percentage of the people there are morons (you are bound to get a few in an 80k crowd) but for me it’s still the best 4 days of the year.

Don’t say sarcasm is the lowest form
of wit – I rely on it heavily!

You are, of course, correct – choosing to spend your money differently from me doesn’t make you an idiot.

I’m never to be taken 100% literally.

But no one ever reduced the price of anything by paying that price for it.

    That’s my point.

    The rest was just gratuitous.

    As per usual.

I go 2 or 3 times a year to the home of jumps racing. And I wouldn’t like to live without it. I just love the place.

However. I have started driving myself (and occasionally taking the current Ms Cider) down so as to avoid the exorbitant fees of hotel and beverage.

I also go to “the fez” every year on an organised coach trip which is now £80 on the Tuesday which includes an enormous breakfast at a pub a few miles from the track first. But I’ve decided this year it’s the first year I’m just not paying for the (5hite) beer.

As we all know, the sooner the majority of people start to take a stand the sooner the powers that be have to do something about it.

You see, these are the wise words of a man who loves the gaff – Chezza gets that, many do – but knows it’s possible to eat and drink either side of the racing.

Now Chezza is the most miserable man on the planet – that’s a given – but when he’s sat down Chez Chezza at 1.30pm on the Tuesday with a nice glass of cold Dandelion & Burdock on the go, he’ll already be four figures up on the week compared to the actual racegoers before the tape even goes up for the Supreme.

Chezza’s all about the bottom line – mind you, the mute button always gets some hammer that week and Chezza may need a new remote by Friday evening!

The ability of modern ‘journalists’ to get hundreds of words out of what is essentially a few people moaning on Twitter never ceases to amaze me.

I stand to be corrected but for those coming from London, I don’t imagine £7.50 is necessarily that outrageous. I’ve not been in a while but I’d have thought it’s not that hard to find pints at north of £6 now. Even in cheaper big cities £5 is not uncommon.

You’d have to sell 66,250 more pints at £6 to get the same takings from the 265,000 pints quoted at £7.50. Would they sell that many more if it was £1.50 cheaper? Who knows? Indeed, who cares? The price is what it is, pay it or don’t. It’s been publicised nearly seven weeks before the event. If it bothers you that much then don’t go. They will soon find someone who will go and will buy their Guinness.

Not difficult at all, especially if it is modern craft beers. Even strong cask beers are around £6 or more in Central London.

I recently paid £5.10 for a pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord in the Philharmonic Dining Rooms pub in Liverpool. Although it was only £4.50 just down the road in the Roscoe Head.
