I agree that both Denman and Kauto should never have gone to Aintree after Gold Cup defeats but Nicholls has learned from that and he is big enough to admit he was wrong.
January 23, 2010 at 14:40 #271614He should have learned after the first time, Ben. My main point is though, a massive line should be drawn right through Aintree, and a Kauto V Denman at Cheltenham debate should not take into consideration flat track form. The going could end up the biggest factor, if they both get there fully fit. I just hope this match up has the same excitement after Denman finishes at Newbury on February. That race will give us all more amo from a debate perspective.

There are rumours going around that Denman may well go to the Cotswold Chase next week at Cheltenham.
The amo for debate could be even sooner.
January 24, 2010 at 00:56 #271749Best Mate better than Kauto…….
January 31, 2010 at 14:10 #273232I can’t see him making any impression on the front two, but Henrietta Knight today confirmed Calgary Bay a definite runner in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
She cited the lack of opportunities available to the 153-rated chaser, and he will now go straight to Cheltenham.
I notice that he’s available at 33/1 w/o Kauto Star and Denman.
He will probably go to Aintree after his Festival assignment before embarking on a campaign next season, with the Grand National his main target.
I’m particularly excied by this news – can’t wait to see him jump those big fences.

Fill your boots Bos, he is the "Nortons Coin" of this years Gold Cup,but thats only because he is 100/1,he will be less than half that on the day! The darkest of dark horses, who is only just beginning to show he is a serious horse! Imperial commander, Albertas Run and Calgary Bay are my 3 against the big 2! all at massive prices! 310 for a fiver on the big horse will keep me on my toes!

I was tempted with the 20/1 on Betfair Bos until you mentioned the 33/1 available!I had a quick look on Oddschecker and Bet 365 are going 50/1, 1/4 the odds 1st 3,so if he can finish 5th,you will still get 12.5/1 a place! The Kings gone in again!
Cheers!January 31, 2010 at 20:50 #273312I was mightly impressed by Taranis given how long he had been away, looks like he will go for the Gold Cup, and Nicholls seems to think he has another horse capable of excelling in a Gold Cup race. Talked him up a hell of a lot more than What A Friend.
8/1 seems to huge, and if I find a market for a Nicholls 1-2-3 it will be probably likely, I cant see Imperial Commander staying in a race that will hugely test his stamina even though he does love Cheltenham, all the rest I don’t think are good enough.

Can talk him up all he wants Red but the fact is Taranis won a Ryanair 3 years ago and has been stuck in his box since. To expect him to finish in front of Imperial Commander is like asking Hardy Eustace to win this years Champion Hurdle.
There’s talk of a PN first 4-5 but to be honest I think he’ll be lucky to get the first 2.
Either Denman will gallop Kauto Star into submission which is perfectly possible or he will gallop himself into submission and be an easy target for Imperial Commander to pass.
It’s only natural for a horse like Imperial Commander to improve and I think he has done so big time. He never got the chance to prove that at Kempton due to a very bad blunder early in the race.
This is one exceptionally good horse IMO is the one the best of the Nicholls duo has to beat. 3/1 without both is a gift. Even backing him ew at 14/1 could be a great bet as it only takes one mistake from Kauto/Denman in the closing stages and this fella will pounce. The way he came up the hill in the Ryanair you certainly wouldn’t want him anywhere near your quarters approaching the last.

Fist
Some inconsitency here
Kauto beats a recovering Denman by 13 lengths and you say that cannot be reveresed
Yet reading your CH posts you confidently expect Go Native to reverese 13 lengths with Voler La Vadette even though Go Native had no heart problems
Please clarify the difference in the two lots of 13 lengths……………..
You really don’t get it do you? Your views are so simplistic they are laughable.
Lot more to racing than 2+2 = 4 mate and your comments on Best Mate being superior to Kauto Star just emphasise that you are unable to spot the obvious…….Cheltenham Specialist? wouldn’t like to back your tips for Sandown if that’s the way you think mate.
Did you know that Paul Nichols thought Denman would just about win at Kempton? Turns out he was wrong but by hell if you think Denman wasn’t fit at Cheltenham then you are way out there mate.
There were two major differences that day. Kauto ran much better than he did the year before and Denman was ridden to get home because PN wasn’t sure how fit he was. As it turned out had Denman been ridden differently he would have still got home and no doubt put more pressure on Kauto but how mush faster do you think Denman can go?
Kauto won a truly run race with absolute ease and was going so well 3 out Ruby had no choice but go on………Denman going half a stride quicker would have helped Kauto IMO not detracted from the horses performance and it wasn’t like it was at the last fence Kauto destroyed Denman with his pace it was at stage when Denman was still full of running.

Would that be the same Imperial Commander that featured in what turned out to be a sprint for the last 6 furlongs at Haydock, and has failed to stay 3 miles every other time he’s tried (6 in total).
Save your money mate, he won’t be in the first 4 at the business end.February 1, 2010 at 11:30 #273389Would that be the same Imperial Commander that featured in what turned out to be a sprint for the last 6 furlongs at Haydock, and has failed to stay 3 miles every other time he’s tried (6 in total).
Save your money mate, he won’t be in the first 4 at the business end.I have backed Imperial commander on the strength that Cheltenham is his course and when he"s right,he"s a proper Gold Cup horse! What i have seen from his successes around Prestbury, the trip will be within his compass! He looks the part too,he is easy to identify at the gallop, long athletic beast with a willing head! The day he spoilt his copybook behind Joe Lively,he was a sick horse, who never jumped a fence of the 3m1f course!I rate Paddy Brennans judgement and i can remember him saying after the Ryanair, this is a baby who has Gold cup written all over him! Words like the best horse he has ever sat on,bode well with me! Not in the first 4 eh Reet? If only you put your money where your mouth is! 2/1???

OK mouth.
I was simply trying to save Fist’s money, I’d have no qualms about taking yours.
How much?February 1, 2010 at 12:15 #273401OK mouth.

How much? What price will you give me that Imperial Commander finishes in the 1st 4 in the Cheltenham Gold Cup? Just to clarify!

The 2/1 you asked for.
Better to do it by PM though, as it isn’t what this forum’s about, imo.February 1, 2010 at 12:23 #273403The 2/1 you asked for.
Stipulate your rules, if you could be so kind!

Cheers!Having snaffled the 50"s last night,i couldn"t resist going in again! Incredibly Bet365 have slashed the price from 50/1 to 20/1 in the last 24hrs! When the King addresses his public…!
