It was mentioned in passing on Thursday night that Ruby isn’t as ‘bullish’ about Kauto this year as he has been in previous years; whether this was at any irish preview events or just in general I have no idea; maybe he thinks Nipper has progressed [although it’s a worry that the Irish race was closer to Cheltenham than planned], but , if so, you’d have to say that Exotic Dancer had the beating of him [possibly] earlier in the year, and it was a wise move of Jonjo’s to not send him to Ireland the second time. However, it was also mentioned in passing that Jonjo would prefer to run him in the Ryanair.

The plan was always to wait and see how Denman went before deciding to opt out and go for the Ryanair. With the huge doubt hanging over Denman of course he has to run in the GC.

Ruby not being as bullish this time means very little.

He’ll be storing up what he has to say and will let loose on Thommo on the way back to the winning enclosure…….words like Off and Womble come to mind

    War Of Attrition ruled out…

Tom Taaffe was saying at one of the preview nights that Mouse was trying to convince Michael O’Leary to bypass Cheltenham with a view to keeping him fresh for Liverpool. Apparently he is very keen on him for the National.

Pity there’s no Irish runner now. Just goes to show the dearth of top class chasers on this side of the Irish Sea.

Kauto Star’s easing in the market has to be a concern IMO. The vibes so close to the race aren’t good. What with he and Denman having no confidence behind them I’d be tempted to lay the pair of them.

That would be an interesting lay Ian, and quite a brave one.

I’ve backed Kauto at 4/1 (taken the morning before Denman got beaten). To be honest I don’t think he SHOULD win but with question marks against virtually everything else I had to take that price. Personally I think it will be another "Nortons Coin" or "Cool Dawn" year but what it will be I don’t know.

Kauto was all out last year due to the pace set by Denman (possibly combined with any other fitness issues not ironed out) If that same pace is set and maitained this year then he is in danger again but tell me what could set that pace? There is no horse in this race with the cruising speed of Denman last year (including Denman) so this years Gold Cup is just another race set up for KS to do what he does best against oposition he has already done it to.

exscuse me for being thick but actually neptune set the pace lastyear.. that was always pauls plan for him to set the pace for denman but luckily fitz rode like a saint

I doubt very very much if there is anything wrong with Kauto Star Ian. As soon as the rains came the bookies are bound to be more willing to take the risk as they are hoping Kauto won’t get the trip in soft ground.

Oooo, this Gold Cup plot has plenty more thickening left! :P

So KS is out to 9/4 and could be 3/1 on the day of the race and Denman is down to 6/1 with Neptunes steady at 5/1.

    WTF.

I STILL think KS will shut any doubters up once and for all. The only horse that can beat him seems to be 2/3rds of the horse he was last year.

Exotic Dancer looks better and better with each passing hour!

A repeat of anything like his Lexus run will be enough and I can already see AP taking a pull turning for home. I plan to steam in once more before bed

Kauto is shortening again now 15/8ish. Last week it looked like you may get 11/4 if you hung on a bit.

Strengthening, the vibes look better now. Still wouldn’t want to be having a bet in this race though.

Don’t see why so many people hate Kauto Star, I definatly believe people have trends in certain horses and will jump on the bandwagon of anything new thats come along to ignore whats been around for a while, the name maybe old hat now but the horse Kauto is one of the greatest ever imo.

I looked at his record last night compared to all of the other horses in the race and the 111111121111111112 [or something like that] still stood out from all the others…..can’t help but wonder; can we have a ‘don’t know’ vote?

Kauto doesnt stay a proper testing gallop – but if its a tactical sprit he may win. I dont think Denman is going to be back to his best (I hope he is) but I’m not sure whether anything can set the pace to test Kauto – I fancied Neptune this year straight after last years race to be ahead of Kauto and what has happened to Denman should make me more certain but I have doubts because of the ground. On softer ground I would be more certain of a test – but at a proper racing pace for the whole distance I’m sure Kautos stamina will be found out as it was last year.

(does that make sense – I know what I mean anyway  )

I think one thing is for sure – with the stats the way that they are – if Denman doesnt win he might never regain his crown – a sobering thought.

i personally don’t think either will finish the race, Denman Pulled up Kauto maybe fall after not getting away with one. Neptune? just don’t fancy that either. Exotic (not McCoys year) Madison too far ahead of Denman & co last time!!!(too wierd that race) The Queen might have a good day probably have a watching punt on that. A very interesting renewal for the wrong reasons?
