No dead wood in this one anyway. BMG should be able to account for these even if he’s not quite 100% fit. He’s the first leg of a double for me and hopefully the first clutch of points for a lot of us in the TTF.

I was wrong, race fitness (and the handy 6lb) told. Good jumping by both those two and a nice round from Midnight River too.

Well done Mouse and Gentlemansgame :good:

Winner could be very decent on just his 3rd ever start over fences although he did have the race fitness advantage – BMG, I am not sure there was a lot left in the tank even before the error at the last (he seemed to be at pains to hold onto him as long as possible) and I just get the impression that he might be a horse that doesn’t find as much off the bridle as he looks like he will.

You might want to rewatch the King George back ;o)

The last face blunder proved costly there. He went from cruising to being in trouble.

You would expect him to hold on as long as he could, no point in putting the foot to the tin 3 out and ripping the guts out of him in a grade 2 season opener when he isn’t fully wound up.

In fact that race might have done the King George good- BMG had a nice prep run without being flogged but the fact that he lost might encourage undecided connections of some of the KG entries to have a swing at it.

Can understand Bravemansgame being held on to until late. Probably trying to win as easily as possible with bigger targets fairly close at hand.

    Result flatters the winner.

Nicholls saying Cobden said it was fitness that found him out – said he will improve a load for Kempton.

Will run my initial comment back a little based on that but it is still in my mind that it might be an issue, if they all turn up at Kempton it will most likely definitively answer the question either way.

The Nicholls horses might not be as forward this year. Hitman ran a shocker at Aintree on Sunday and Bravemansgame needed it here.

Ahoy Senor does not seem to learn. He was never going after that awful jump at the end of the first circuit.

He would not have won anything today but don’t they seriously have to think about the Stayers Hurdle now? It does not look a strong division and it must be worth a go.

Winner open to all manner of improvement on only his 3rd chase (looked very comfortable at it) and 10 lifetime start – also a year younger than BMG.

Don’t forget he was only beaten 3L in the Stayers Hurdle at Punchestown so he brings a high level of hurdles form and looks to have improved more for the switch to the bigger obstacles…..there would be a lot worse bets for the Gold Cup and he also might improve for an extra 2F.

CAS – good shout re Ahoy Senor….he just seems to be one of those horses that off a long stride is ok but when asked to fiddle when the stride isn’t there he has trouble organising himself, I doubt he will ever iron out that issue and it will always cost him at the top level over fences……hurdles are more forgiving so it should be seriously consider going back to them..

I dunno about Ahoy Senor, I think he would be equally incompetent back over hurdles. I just watched his Sefton novices’ win back and OK I am being very harsh as it was only his 2nd hurdles start, but he didn’t look a natural hurdler either. He won easily but the next 3 had hard races at Cheltenham which he had skipped, and Bravemansgame was full of stomach ulcers IIRC.

I don’t think Ahoy Senor would place in a Stayers hurdle.

Having said that, I don’t know what I would do if I owned him. The Many Clouds next perhaps. Then the Cotswold or the Denman, skip Cheltenham and go all-out for the Bowl?

BMG a bit disappointing, even allowing for race fitness, giving 6lb, mistake at the last. Apart form that he jumped impeccably as usual. Possibly the winner may turn out to be better than expected

I wonder what Gentlemansgame will do next.
He’s not in the Betfair, and it’s only 3 weeks away…but they could strike while the iron is hot and supplement. It’s unlikely they will, but I’d be interested in him for it next year anyway.

Not many options so assume they will be looking to go to the Savills Chase considering that Gerri Colombe (in the same ownership) has an entry for the Betfair/King George.

Um, Ahoy Senor is going to the Coral Cup next. Mmm’k. He’s rated 169 and can’t jump.

BMG travelled really well then made a mistake and blew up , I doubt he was even 80% fit , he,s still the one to beat in the KG
