Could only see viewing figures going down if Chapman was employed. He’s all “me me me” and is too loud. The guy needs to learn a bit of humility.
He’s okay about 10% of time and lulls you into a false sense of security when making good points about issues like the whip and making Big Mac look stupid regards it but I’m afraid 90% of the time he is a turn off.
He’s been sacked more times than Tommy Doc and sometimes after only short tenures. Needs to go to America or Australia, sure they would appreciate him there.
June 25, 2015 at 13:15 #1114818I know Matt is not everybody’s cup of tea but I find him hugely entertaining and his love of racing shines through. The Sunday forum with Matt,Big mac and any of the other excellent guests( John berry was so good when he was on) make it to the best racing programme around. Matt surely is better than what is there at the moment. If not we may see racing off terrestrial tv in a few years.
June 27, 2015 at 15:39 #1116938I haven’t seen the figures, but does anyone know what C4’s viewing figures were with the old team and when “competing” with the Beeb for viewers? I’m just wondering if this is all a made up story really in that viewing figures for C4 haven’t dropped at all
The Post reported this a few days ago: http://www.racingpost.com/news/horse-racing/steve-lyle-channel-4-viewing-figures-in-line-with-last-years-coverage/1902786/#newsArchiveTabs=last7DaysNews
However, there was a report elsewhere in the press a day or so after the Royal Meeting ended which stated that C4 lost 500,00 viewers and that the channel blamed it on the tennis.
June 27, 2015 at 16:10 #1116949I rarely watch it but did today and decided I like Alice Plunkett – for a posh bird she seems quite a regular girl and has a sense of humour.
Tanya Stevenson doesn’t really understand betting markets, but Graham Cunningham seems a regular guy with a sense of humour too and I don’t really get why people knock the show so much.
They will miss it when it is gone and the business case for free to air TV racing gets weaker every year.

It is very weak and without the generous sponsorship I would imagine Channel 4 would dump it as soon as possible as the advertising revenue is pitiful.
June 27, 2015 at 16:26 #1116980^^^^ Exactly.
Re Matt Chapman, I don’t watch ATR much but the impression I get from him is he will always express a strong opinion – he is a bit of a young McCririck in that respect – and in a racing media still full of sycophancy that can be refreshing no matter how daft he might look when proven wrong sometimes.
I do think he used to just try to be controversial fir controversial’s sake when he was younger but he puts a bit more mature thought into the stances he adopts nowadays.
I kinda like him – boring he is not.

John McCririck was sacked by C4 for being too controversial so there’s no way they will hire Chapman for that same reason

Plunkett, refreshing? You have got to be joking.

Matt Chapman is actually Okay 33% of the time. That 33% is the eight hours of the day when he is asleep. Thank you for listening, I’m Morethan Freeman
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Different strokes then because I find Matt the very best entertainment of all the racing presenters.
You can keep your ‘Timeform Jim Mcgrath, Pouting Emma and others as far as I am concerned.June 28, 2015 at 05:50 #1117362Matt Chapman is top class. He has the charisma to attract people. He is wasted on the dreadful ATR. He should be snapped up by RUK immediately, he’d be equally wasted at the equally dreadful Channel 4.
June 28, 2015 at 06:31 #1117366Why not all three? Chappers already does ATR, Sky Dogs, Coral TV, a Sun column, a Paddy Power column and goodness knows what else. The man is a workaholic!

Aren’t the viewing figures a red herring? Every big event which moves from the beeb receives smaller viewing figures which suggests that either:
A There are millions of people who only ever watch programmes on BBC1
Or
B the viewing figures aren’t worth the paper they’re written on.
