An excellent match and I hope the final is just as good. It was a strange game emotionally for me though as I was cheering for Liverpool to win but when Chelsea were awarded a penalty and Lampard stepped up to take it then I wanted him to score.
I thought Chelsea were the better team on the night and deserved to win but I was hoping for a Barca – Liverpool final so I was disappointed in the results of both semis.
The fans may have a shock when they get to Moscow though as apparently is is the most expensive city in europe.

May 1, 2008 at 14:53 #160944Clivex and LGR you are both right about who controlled the game, Chelsea ran Liverpool ragged first half and first half of extra time. Liverpool had fresh legs with resting players at the weekend and you could see that in the second half with Liverpool having the most possesion but unfortunatly the passing by the reds and movement was’nt right, they gave the ball away to cheaply to many times, which lead to Chelsea’s first goal.
LGR i agree with you regarding Rafa’s bad signings and tactics, you look at United’s right winger Ronaldo, Barcelona with Messi and Liverpool with Kuyt who would you rather be marking?
Charles Darwin to conquer the World
May 2, 2008 at 00:58 #161020I’m just beginning to get disillusioned by the seemingly fictitious ‘Rafalution’ and the hold it has over the majority of Liverpool fans. Benitez is a poor tactician and has wasted far too much time and money in signing complete no-hopers. There is talk at the minute of selling Steve Finnan, John Arne Riise, Xavi Alonso, Jermaine Pennant, Harry Kewell and Peter Crouch and, should these go come to pass, I will have no doubt in my mind that our gaffer has lost the plot.
If we sell Riise, who I still think deserves more respect for what he has done for the club, then we have Fabio Aurelio as our only natural left-back. Alvaro Arbeloa can cover this position, but he’s going to be needed to fill Steve Finnan’s role at right-back – another position where we have little cover. So, as well as losing a solid left-back whose only problem at the moment is a lack of confidence, we’re suddenly left short in two positions (Sebastian Leto is a class act in the reserves, but isn’t cut out for the Premiership as yet).
Getting rid of Harry Kewell has been a no-brainer for two years, despite the promise he showed after his move from Leeds, but Benitez has left it so long that we’re going to get next-to-nothing for him. I also agree that we could do without Jermaine Pennant, who did well pre-season when first joining us but has failed to impress in any game since.
Then we come to the biggest problem, the sale of Alonso and Crouch. Xavi has been a superb servant for us over the last three years, and can distribute a ball brilliantly – he commanded the entire midfield against Chelsea in the first leg last week – and Crouch just isn’t given the credit he deserves. I will admit that I didn’t think the £7m we shelled out for him would be returned on the pitch, but he’s been a revelation. The partnership of tall and strong, and strong and quick, used to serve Liverpool extremely well and as far as I can see Crouch and Torres is a match made in heaven. Should we sell Crouch, we’re left with Ryan Babel and Andriy Voronin as our alternative attacking options. Shoot me now.
Benitez is reacting to pressure from the Americans without thinking about what he’s doing and will, I’m sure, look no further than Spain to fill every gap he creates. Thirteen of his first fourteen signings at Liverpool were either Spanish, or playing in Spain, and we looked destined to be re-named Liverpoolio FC. He has, admittedly, looked elsewhere for more recent signings – going as far away as Holland and Hungary. What an eye for talent he has…
We have had the likes of Paul Anderson – a superb youngster we signed from Hull a year or so ago – and Godwin Antwi farting about in the reserves, or on loan, for far too long with no sign of them being given a chance to prove themselves. The only reserve players we have seen out in the first team have been Nabir El Zhar, Damien Plessis (the most one-footed player I have ever seen) and the Hespanic/Latino pair of Emiliano Insua and Sebastien Leto.
Just what goes on at Liverpool these days beggars belief at times, and I’m getting tired of failure after failure when we’re supposed to be on the way up.
