August 28, 2008 at 20:51 #178481That easy draw for Chelsea with Roma the only concern should allow them concentrate on amassing Premier League points early on. The 11/10 (2.16 BF) will look very good if they’ve the League sown up by Halloween! And a couple of tough physical encounters for Man U against Celtic to help keep the Red Devils off their back.
Not an idea who will win the Champions league.
August 28, 2008 at 21:19 #178484I think all the English side’s will progress into the next round even Liverpool

Strange seeing the draw being made without AC Milan being in the mix.

August 28, 2008 at 21:45 #178485Looking at the early prices on Betfair, Bayern Munich at 21/1 looks a value bet. You’d have to be confident that they could win their group and then be able to lay them at something much shorter. I don’t think they’ll win the trophy, but they’re at a price that’s asking to be traded.
August 28, 2008 at 22:10 #178491Good spot Insomniac.
For me teh winner will come from Chelsea or Man Utd and, if they avoid each other in teh draws, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a repeat of last season’s final.
Celtic look to have a sporting chance of a last 16 place while if you are looking for a relative upset Zenit St Petersburg may well give Real Madrid and Juventus a few problems.
August 28, 2008 at 22:27 #178495I don’t believe there is anything much between Bayern and Lyon while Fiorentina and Bucharest are the kind of unfashionable teams that can give the bigger boys a headache. Don’t go in too deep,Insomniac
August 29, 2008 at 00:16 #178506Easy draw for Chelski, slightly harder for Man U, harder still for Arsenal and at least Liverpool can spend the new year concentrating on trying to qualify for UEFA next season
August 29, 2008 at 13:15 #178546As much as it irks me to say – Celtic will find it difficult to emerge from this group. Further strengthening is still required – but the recent recruitment of Barcelona’s young midfielder, Crosas, and Shaun Maloney, back at the club where he belongs, from Aston Villa – gives us Celtic fans some glimmer of hope.
Villarreal are certainly no mugs. They finished second in La Liga last season and always play fast, attacking football.
Aalborg are managed managed by Bruce Rioch. They are the inknown quantity in the group but again, will be no pushovers, if Man City’s Danish Uefa Cup opponents are anything to go by.
Manchester United and current CL holders are obvioulsy firm favourites and will be difficult to beat, home or away.

August 31, 2008 at 09:04 #178677A smashing analysis Firefox. I don’t follow Spanish football that much (don’t see enough of the family with watching English soccer) so that cool appraisal is food for thought. I’m sure you’re right that odds-compilers’ tend not to see beyond Spain’s big two, so you look to have spotted a value bet. Good luck.
September 2, 2008 at 13:32 #178995I think zenith st. Petersburg are a cracking E/W bet and recently teams that have done well in uefa cup have done well in the champions league, if they hold to some of their players that is
33/1….. 1/2 the odds 1st 2 think it was much more before fridays win over manure
December 19, 2008 at 16:20 #197997Second round draw just taken place.
Chelsea vs Juventus
Villarreal vs Panathinaikos
Sporting Lisbon vs Bayern Munich
Athletico Madrid vs Porto
Lyon vs Barcelona
Real Madrid vs Liverpool
Arsenal vs Roma
Inter Milan vs Man Utd
any thoughts on that?

Who is it that believes that Nigel Pearson is worth employing?
As for this morning’s draw, I’m reasonably happy with Liverpool’s pairing with Real Madrid. Obviously things can change between now and February, but how likely is Juande Ramos to mastermind a complete turnaround in the club’s fortunes? I have my doubts, and if we have Skrtel back and Torres fully fit, with the second leg at Anfield, we should progress.
So too should Manchester United, though it pains me to say it. Inter aren’t seemingly the force they were, evident by the way of two Champions League defeats at the hands of Liverpool last season. The Premiership’s big boys have developed a habit of dropping points against relatively poor teams, but when it comes to these typesof games they generally step up.
Chelsea haven’t looked entirely convincing in the competition thus far, with defeat in Rome showing them in a particularly bad light. Whilst I would expect them to improve the trip to Turin might well be problematic, so they need to win the tie in the first leg.
There’s a lot to be said for supporting English clubs in Europe, but I’m afraid I don’t subscribe to that at all. I have to have some empathy for Chelsea as some of my family support them, but I can’t stand Arsenal (it’s probably jealousy in truth, in that Wenger’s transfer record is leagues ahead of Benitez’s) and they look likely to have two difficult games. Roma won’t mind roughing the Gunners up and as we all know they’re prone to falling apart in such circumstances. This could be the end of the road without a thumping win at the Emirates.
December 19, 2008 at 18:23 #198041Off-topic but the standard of commentating is appalling in this day and age.
I don’t know how many people saw the Barcelona vs Real Madrid match last weekend but Eto’o missed a penalty before scoring a goal which basically hit his knee from 5 yarsd our before trickling into the net.
The Sky commentator then comes out with this classic
"Eto’o shows marvellous mental strength following his penalty miss to be in the right place to score that goal"
I mean FFS – I had to turn the sound down for the rest of the match
March 20, 2009 at 17:43 #217537Quarter-Final & Semi-Final draw took place today and the pairings are as follows (first named team at home first):
Man Utd (2/1) or Porto (50/1) -vs- Villareal (33/1) or Arsenal (8/1)
Barcelona (3/1) or Bayern Munich (16/1) -vs- Liverpool (7/1) or Chelsea (7/1)A quick glance at the outright prices above would indicate to me that Arsenal are a good bet at 8/1 (each-way 1/2 1,2 with Ladbrokes). They should prove to be too strong for Villareal which means a semi-final against (probably) Man Utd with the 2nd leg at the Emirates.
Last weekend showed how little difference there is between the Big-4 in England and the games between them really are like cup-finals with the winner basically coming from who turns up on the day.
I also like an All-English final at 11/10 with Blue Square as either Liverpool or Chelsea will be at home for the 2nd leg of that half’s semi-final and they should both be too strong physically for Barcelona or Bayern (who were flattered by a poor Sporting Lisbon in the last round IMO)
Any thoughts?

Manchester United get yet another favourable draw, and the lead-lined balls belonging to Liverpool and Chelsea curiously find themselves drawn consecutively for the upteenth time.
How very predictable.
As it stands I think we (Liverpool) are ideally placed to make the final. Chelsea haven’t impressed under Hiddink, despite their unbeaten record, and I can’t see that the ineffective partnership of Anelka and Drogba is going to worry (any combination of) Carragher/Hyypia/Skrtel. Barcelona will likely await us in the semi-final, but they’ve been hammering sub-standard Spanish teams all year and could find the realisation of playing ‘proper’ football too much to handle in much the same way Real Madrid did. We weren’t supposed to beat the Catalans when we made the final two years ago – and with Craig Bellamy up front, such pessimism was understandable – and we’re a much better side now.
15/2 with Coral will do me just fine.

*cough* FIX!! *cough*
If Mr Ferguson were to conduct the draw himself it couldn’t have worked out any better for United!
