Beech Road 200November 11, 2007 at 14:03 #124199I believe you’re referring to Golden Cygnet.
Thanks, that was the horse. Anyone remember seeing those races or have a Timeform to see how highly he was rated?
November 11, 2007 at 17:57 #124237Hello,
MORLEY STREET, on the bridle.
Good, old, honest Bradley on his back…

doyley

I’ve never seen any of his races, but Timeform gave him a Chasers & Hurdlers rating of 176.

Beech Road 200This is supposed to be a bit of fun Smart ass!!!
I often wonder why they called me the Jockey back in the UK and I managed to retire to asia COS I WON SO MUCH MONEY!!!! bozo…..you so far of the mark Ladbokes must love ya……50/1 Salmon Spray who beat the previous years champion hands down. Anhilated the 2nd highest rated NH horse of all time in the Champion/……….you are some judge mate!! keep taking the tablets. bTW i made up the list and put a couple of horses in at silly prices……….What? you want me to put my first 3 in the first thre in the betting….get alife and don’t be coming near me with yer silly insults again
November 11, 2007 at 22:53 #124289Massive overreaction FoF. People are going to comment about prices ~ you shouldn’t take it personally. Naturally if you’re playing pretend bookie, everyone who rates themselves is going to try to skin you on Night Nurse. For what it’s worth, in such a lineup, I reckon they’d go off at a ferocious pace which would play into the hands of the greatest hurdler in my mind, Sea Pigeon. Sure Night Nurse beat him over the old course when connections hadn’t quite worked Sea Pigeon out but he was awesome as an old horse and one of the very few who held top class form through to the end of his career. Both Fred Winter and Fulke Walwyn were asked in the mid eighties who they rated the best champion as they had a unique insight into the race and both, without hesitation, plumped for Sea Pigeon.
November 12, 2007 at 17:32 #124410My Apolgies to you and the guy……….had a few beers in me and the post just annoyed me. Rooster Booster!!! if he was in a 2 horse race with the horses I have seen win the CH they wouldn’t even run a book.
However it did urge me to write individual reports on each horse and explain why I think and why. Which no doubt will attract a few comments like the above………I better stay of the beer
I will probably stick it up tomorrowBTW I stuck a few ringers in there at stupid prices to make it more interesting.
If I was to have made up the prices as I really thought my first 4 in the betting would have finished 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th. Would they not?
If you read one of my other posts regarding Kauto Star you will see I mention I have a friend who was a bookie for a lot of years.
As a matter of interest I asked him to do a very quick book. It took him about 3 minutes albeit he was as drunk as me but he came up with this.
5/1 Persian War, 11/2 Monksfield 13/2 Night Nurse,Sea Pigeon, 7/1 Bula 8/1 Istabraq, 10/1 Salmon Spray,Comedy of Errors 12/1 Lanzarote,14/1 Alderbrook, Hardy Eustace 16/1 See You Then, Beech Road 20/1 Morley Street, 25/1 Gay Brief 33/1 Brave Inca, 250/1 Rooster Booster
He missed one out, but good I thought and pretty near to what I think. Only thing is he won’t let me have a bet
November 12, 2007 at 19:42 #124428his prices are closer to mine than to yours
November 14, 2007 at 09:56 #124683Well here’s my result or at least my idea of a result………suprise Rooster was withdrawn at the start and he and his jockey were last seen heading up the M1 to Sedgefield for the 5 O’clock The "Stuff this for a Game of Soldiers Handicap Hurdle" run over 17 miles for untried maidens

Istabraq: He was one of the classiest animals I ever saw on a race course. If someone said he would have won any Champion Hurdle I would not argue. My only concern with him was would he come out on top against another GREAT HURDLER if it came down to a fight. He was so classy nothing ever as much as made him break sweat when he was on song. That is the only glitch in his make-up I can find and that’s a big maybe…..a certainty for the first 4.
Salmon Spray: The year before he won he beat Champion hurdler Magic Court in hack canter, He was a joy to watch and a real class act. Flying Bolt had already won a race at the meeting and was stable companion of the mighty Arkle. He was rated only 2nd to “Himselfâ€November 14, 2007 at 10:21 #124688Both Lanzarote and Comedy of Errors were very good horses but both disappeared off the scene by the next year, when Night Nurse won his first champion hurdle.
Lanzarote went chasing in 76/77 and broke a leg in the Gold Cup.
At his best I think he would have been a pretty strong 12/1 against those listed.

November 14, 2007 at 11:34 #124699I would most certainly rate Night Nurse superior to Monksfied.
Night Nurse won arguably the most competive Champion Hurdle ever and at aintree in 1977 (prior to Red Rum’s third Grand National win ) he dead heated with Monksfield in the Templegate Hurdle, conceding the Irish horse six pounds. A superb performance and viewed amongst many racing aficianados as the finest ever hurdling performance.

November 15, 2007 at 23:06 #124997There was abig differnece you failed to mention though.
Monksfield a 15/1 shot for the Champion was totally unfancied the first time they met.
At Aintree it was a great race but Monksfield wasn’t anyting like the horse he became.
On the second occasion Night Nurse 3/1 was still the horseeveryone was talking about. He was fancied by everyone and their uncles, me included. Plus he was still only a 7 year old at the time and in his prime. He met a much more mature Monksfiled in 1978 and he beat him very easily by 8 lengths.
They both ran once more at Aintree in the 1978 Templgate and Monksfield proved far superior again.
I just can’t convince myself he was as good as Monkey no matter how hard I try.
February 10, 2008 at 22:50 #142069Fascinating subject so here is how I see it – its down to how the race could be run. If you assume a slower pace then its Bula, a strong pace Persian War, and perfect jumping Night Nurse. Best value outsider Brave Inca. Big danger Sea Pigeon. Based upon 136% book
4/1 Persian War
9/2 Bula
6/1 Night Nurse
8/1 Istabraq, Sea Pigeon
12/1 See You Then, Monksfield, Lanarote
14/1 Comedy of Errors
16/1 Kribensis
20/1 Dawn Run
25/1 Brave Inca
33/1 Hardy Eustace, Royal Gait, Alderbrook
50/1 BarFebruary 10, 2008 at 23:51 #142082Kribensis is at 16/1 primarily because Dunwoody is riding
Hardy Eustace would get big support at 33/1 bet down probably to 20/1 but I am the bookie and I would take it allFebruary 11, 2008 at 00:25 #142094Fist,
Even though you are working to 180% there are few with a chance of winning.
Dawn Run’s performance in the Champion was nowhere near her best form and at her best, if she now gets a 5lb allowance is not out of it. Persian War wasn’t bad either but is too short. Those brilliant 70’s rivals Night Nurse, Monksfield, Sea Pigeon with Istabraq the only other contenders for me.Can I still get £100 Night Nurse 14/1?
Soon have to change his price, otherwise you will go out of buisness.
Also,
£200 Monksfield 11/2
£30 Sea Pigeon 14/1Value Is EverythingFebruary 11, 2008 at 00:31 #142096No one has mentioned yet (apologies if I’ve missed it) the Champion hurdle distance was altered in 1980 by a couple of hundred yards.
Once they did that Sea Pigeon was in his element. I’d go for him fractionally ahead of Night Nurse and Monksfield.
Istabraq – Lay, lay, lay – these aren’t Theatreworld’s and French Holly’s.
February 11, 2008 at 00:46 #142102Where does Crisp stand in this line-up?
