I really do hope Douvan and Sprinter clash in this
I’ve been ticking away at Douvan in doubles and trebles and am building a nice little kitty.
If Sprinter retains last years form and no reason to think otherwise it could be a blockbuster. Can you imagine the reaction if Sprinter did to Douvan what he did to UDS.
    Bring it on….!!

Skybet are offering the deal of the century NOT

    Douvan
10/1 to win the 2016 King George and the 2017 Champion Chase
I’d want at least 50/1 just to go that route, how many King George runners let alone winners end up running in the Champion Chase…?

Well Nath – remember One Man? Then again, in the days when there was no RyanAir, DO himself did the KG and CC route on a couple of occasions (finishing placed in the CC), it being recognised that the two races were not so far apart in terms of their stamina requirements (leave aside the obvious differences in the track!). Others, like Edredon Bleu, won the CC and then went on to win the KG as older horses. And plenty others have tried it – Azerty; Master Minded for e.g.

Looking at this, I can see WPM thinking this might be the route. KG – lots of prize money on offer there (trainer’s title); who else will he bump into (what does PN have?); and what other realistic options has he got in the yard of winning it (surely not Vautour on a RH track at Christmas time!). The alternative for Douvan in England is to take on Sprinter at Sandown in early December … :) I think he might wait to do that at Cheltenham – or, at least, if Douvan was mine to plan for, & I had the goal of a trainer’s title to also think about, I wouldn’t want to be bashing his head against the mighty Sprinter that early in his second season. Then, when you think about his other options for the big festival races, surely Douvan must be pencilled in for the CC, for UDS will be RyanAir bound, with Vautour (and Djak) – lined up for the GC (esp. if Coneygree is back).

Looks worth a punt to me.

    Interesting Titus, thank you.
I have heard of One Man but he was before my time of watching horse racing.
I hadn’t realised it was that many but I’d still want more than 10’s but good luck if you’re playing
I suppose there is always that possibility and you cant be sure how many twist and turns to where they all end up in the Mullins merry go round. If Vroum Vroum Mag stays the Mares route and Annie Power the Champion Hurdle then I’d like to see Faugheen jump a fence, I know he’s in the betting for the World Hurdle and I don’t see the distance a worry but I think he would win a King George/Gold Cup but with the yard/owner I cant see him getting the opportunity at this stage.

Ar Mad @ 33/1 EW is juicy. Was 6/1 for the Arkle before injury.

    He’s a tough horse Charlie.
Would Ar Mad have run in the Arkle had he not picked up the set back..?
Last I heard was he was a better horse going on a right handed track.

If Douvan turns up he wins, its as simple as that and 10/11 is short, but fair enough.

I would love to see Douvan v Sprinter, although I think Douvan would win all day.

Could they drop Vautour down though? I know he fell in the JLT Melling Chase at Aintree and then came second to God’s Own over 2m in the Champion Chase at Punchestown, but does dropping him to 2m signal their intent for how they campaign him this coming season?

    I agree Charlie.
Paddy are a standout 25’s on Vautour and worth a few quid for this at that price although I still view him as a Gold Cup horse, nothing comes as a surprise with Mullins where Cheltenham is concerned.

That was my thinking Nathan. A Vautour (CC) & Douvan (GC) double is 338/1. If Willie annouced plans to drop down Vautour and up Douvan (which would come as no surprise, treble figure doubles vanish immedietely

Can’t see Vautour dropping to miles. Got beat by Gods Own and only just held off Simonsig on his second run in how many years….

Vautour had Gold Cup written all over him last year and they bottled it because they thought he wouldn’t settle. I think he was unlucky in the King George last year, looked to have travelled like the best horse in the race. Maybe a little more holding him up, and I think he wins the King George.
Douvan looks every inch the champion chaser to be….

Douvan has been visibly impressive, both as novice hurdler + chaser; not only unbeaten, but never under pressure either. But I want to suspend judgement till last yrs novices start taking on their seniors; always hard to know the standard of a particular generation. But if he was mine, I’d be going for KG, and if he stay, GC. The 2 mile chase is a great prize, but the GC is the BIG One

Just posted this on my blog:

A thirty-grand two-mile handicap chase at Cheltenham today and Fox Norton could be called the winner well before they turned down the hill: he was absolutely tanking along. He threw some athletic, energetic leaps, even late in the race and his handicap mark should go up at least 10lbs to 156. That would still leave him a fair bit short of the mark of a normal Champion Chase winner, but he’s only 6 and looks to have come on a ton since last year.

Douvan is 1/1 fav for the Champion Chase just now, but given what can happen between now and then plus Willie’s penchant for changing a horse’s target, I think 50/1 Fox Norton is a good value bet to keep you warm between now and March.

His form suggests he might benefit substantially from a long rest between races and Nick Williams, who used to train him said early last year that he doesn’t want too much racing. Yet, he had a busy season, and finished 3rd in The Arkle.

Also, it might be that proper good ground is important to him and Cheltenham will open on good to soft at best, as it always does (the Champion Chase is on day 2).

Still, a wee bet at 50s represents value, even with those caveats. And, going by my experience, a wee bet is all you will get at 50/1. The only established bookmaker displaying that price is Bet365 who offered me a maximum of £2.50 ( yes, £2.50, not £25.00).

I would have been more generous! Do they always restrict your bets?

The bad news for everyone else is that you have already forced the price down to 40/1. Presumably, if you had got £5 on it would have been 33/1?

Never had a bet restricted with them: vast majority of my bets are ante-post. Had a novice friend try too – he was also restricted to fifty bob. Poor show.
