For me it is DOMINATION 14/1 will be coming over and as long ground is fast he be one to beat.
October 2, 2005 at 06:28 #24280Having watched the Ascot Stakes thrice, I’ve come to the conclusion that Tiger Cliff will take all the beating in the Cesarewitch. He has proven that he stays, going on well at the end of his race; the probable easier ground at HQ in October will be in his favour; and even Queally will have a job encountering traffic problems on the vast expanse of the Rowley Mile.
It’d also be nice to see Lady Cecil land a prize which always eluded her late husband. I remember Henry fielding two leading fancies, favourite Military Band and second- or third-favourite Tomaschek, in 1981 but neither was quite good enough on the day, with the favourite finishing an honourable third to Peter Walwyn’s Halsbury.

Arch Villain
for me.
Currently 33/1 and due to run in the Cesarewitch Trials at Newmarket on Saturday Arch Villain ran a game 3rd to Aquilonius last time out in he Royal Sussex H’cap Class 2 at Goodwood. He goes well on most surfaces having beaten the useful Oriental Fox a neck at Goodwood on good/soft ground in May this year and in the race won by Aquilonius (Arch Villain 3rd) he made great strides on Argent Knight (last of 9) who had beaten him before at Newmarket on good to firm ground, the only surface he has not yet won on. I was at Newmarket that day and he was the pick of the paddock, big and strong a typical Cesarewitch type.
A good run in the Cesarewitch Trial on Saturday will put him right up there with the contenders and I have taken the 33/1 today (each way) which will hopefully look good Saturday night.

Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...September 18, 2013 at 10:53 #451649Oh I love this race but I’m so out of touch with what’s happening these days. When I retire [6 more days!] I’ll be able to spend all day studying these races [so no excuse for my abyssmal record of late].

Moe wouldn’t it be great to see
Nanton
win it at 11 years of age and not a dry eye in the house. He’s also 33/1 at the moment and runnning in the trial on Saturday. I really hope he turns up this time as I’m going to be at Newmarket on Saturday and can’t wait to see this amazing old trouper, I might PM Hammy to see if he will be at the start to get some great shots of him.
Happy retirement perhaps your leaving pressie will be a lifetimes sub to the Racing PostThings turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...September 19, 2013 at 22:49 #451826I still haven’t got over not backing him when he was placed in the Ebor at 40/1, but I do remember how beautiful he looked walking round the pre parade ring at York; annoying thing is I hadn’t fallen in love with him at that point so didn’t really appreciate seeing him. What is there with greys? We met a chap on holiday that used to help out at Gordon Richards stable so he could help look after One Man [only got chatting because he had a rescue greyhound with him and I love sighthounds]. Did you see the photo of Paddy Brennans wedding, with his stunningly beautiful wife holding
Nacarat?
September 20, 2013 at 21:55 #451925I just saw it on Twitter Moe thanks what a beautiful picture it reminded me of the wedding of Midge Burridges daughter Frances when Desert Orchid was Guest of Honour I think it was on one of the Calendars..happy days, still miss him.
Anyway.. hoping Nanton turns out for the Cesarewitch trials tomorrow at Newmarket so that I can at least see him, who knows he may even win although I don’t think he’s ever run over 2m2f before.

Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...September 21, 2013 at 23:41 #452107Oriental Fox very impressive in the Cesarewitch Trial at Newmarket today he looked as though he could go round again. Disappointing run by Arch Villain who had previously beaten him. Lots of horses back end eased in the final furlong. Can he now turn the tables on Tiger Cliff in 2 weeks time?
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...September 22, 2013 at 09:46 #452120I went into panic mode when racing radio didn’t mention Nanton crossing the line until I realised how many other horses hadn’t been mentioned either. Then went into kick myself mode when I realised Johnny Murtagh had won yet another Saturday race [and then Oisin, the boy wonder had won three, given that he was named after my favourite Irish legend about white horses]. Why study form when things like that happen? It’s all in the runes methinks.
September 22, 2013 at 13:15 #452132I was standing right by the winning post on the steps Moe and watched him come home a brave 14th 55 lengths behind the winner, so I guess the cameras didn’t hang about that long, but there were still 4 younger horses behind him and the very last horse Porcini (which I was advised by an Italian Friend of mine means ‘little pigs’) came in 18th and last 150 lengths behind Oriental Fox
.
I doubt Nanton will run in the Cesarewitch it’s probably time to retire him now. Had a really long look at him in the paddock and he looked fantastic.Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...September 23, 2013 at 19:41 #452230I like the look of my old pal Pallasator for the Ces. He was pulled out of the Ebor but, ironically, the rain came down in buckets by the time of the race. A highly respectable third on his comeback in the Old Borough Cup at Haydock, with Oriental Fox well behind him, he did all his best work late in the race. It was pretty much the same story on his last run of last season where he shaped like a real stayer in bad ground. He comes here fresh and unexposed, with more to give surely?
If he stays he could well be too good for some of the usual suspects. 10/1 is not great odds but worth a couple of quid win only.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
September 24, 2013 at 12:49 #452257I rarely dabble ante-post on the Flat, but when I saw Tac de Boistron win at Chester pulling a bus, I wouldn’t bet in the Ces without knowing if he’s going to take part:
Here’s the RP comment on that race for him:
TAC DE BOISTRON won a 1m6f Longchamp Group 2 on soft ground in July 2012, and was having his second run since disappointing on better ground in Australia on two occasions later that year, including when down the field in the Melbourne Cup.
It is hard not to rate this performance highly, and he still looks to be improving. He has the Cesarewitch as an option in handicap company next month, or the Group 3 Long Distance Cup on British Champions´ Day at Ascot. A return to France may also beckon, and on a similar surface looks one to note this autumn over staying trips in decent Group company.
September 30, 2013 at 13:49 #453025Praying that the going remains on the good side for Domination. Backed it ew before Pricewise tipped it up and also got it in a £20 win double with Educate.
October 8, 2013 at 12:59 #24862Another great betting handicap with it being the main year aim for a number of horses, owing to the huge purse of £250,000. The thing is that there are some very smart trainers, who would like the horse running with a decent weight and therefore, dare I say it, perhaps a bit has been left off in other races to boost their chances by keeping their handicap mark down.
I know this is no great secret I am airing, but what it does is it makes it difficult just looking at form to pick the winner, this is borne out in that in the past 20 years, only 3 horses have won with a single figure betting price.
I’m going double handed here and my first pick is Chiberta King. Andrew Balding has been very good at picking up the prize in big handicaps this year, and has the services of the very talented Oisin Murphy (a pairing that did me well in the Ayr Gold Cup just over 2 weeks ago) who still takes 5lbs off the horse.
Chiberta King will have no problem with the trip and has won on soft, good and good to firm, so conditions don’t matter either.
He showed how good he was when winning the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Ascot in June, battled really well at the end and kept finding. Next two races were a bit less inspiring, particularly his last run in the Doncaster Cup where he was right out the back. So in line with what I was saying earlier, it takes a bit of a leap of faith to think that he will be spot on for this, I think he’s worth the risk and at 25-1 has to be a sound e/w.My other fancy is Clowance Estate, again trained by a trainer, Roger Charlton, who knows how to get a horse ready for a big betting race like this. His last two runs show great promise in a lightly raced horse, running on well over 1m 5f at Newmarket and again keeping on when 3rd in the Old Borough Cup at Haydock last month over 1m 6f. He went off favourite in the race before those, at Goodwood, and again over 1m6f he couldn’t quicken, but was running on. Obviously there is a question mark over whether he will get the trip, and that is reflected in his price of 20-1, but I think the horse is crying out for further.
Charlton is a trainer who knows his onions, and would not be aiming at this if he didn’t think he would get the trip. I would expect his odds to start to shorten over the next few days if the stable think he is in with a good shout, they are known for having a good punt.
A huge field with lots having good chances, best of luck picking one out off this.
October 8, 2013 at 15:30 #454133I’ve just took some of the 10s on offer for
Lieutenant Miller
. Looks an E.W Banker to me will definitely stay, has been in the frame in all his flat starts, was one length behind Tiger Cliff last time they met but has a swing in the weights.
Ryan Moore aboard for the first time, if it doesn’t win it won’t be out the first 3.
October 8, 2013 at 15:32 #454134Another of my favourite races. Will look at the runners later tonight [were too many last time I looked]. When’s the draw? This used to be a good race for me till my ability to pick winners left me.

Moehat, I believe the draw is on Thursday
