This really is unbelievable:-

What is the matter with people?
Can you imagine how this poor woman’s confidence is going to be shattered?
Children are more curious than frightened in my opinion.
Hope the BBC keep her "on air".

February 23, 2009 at 19:18 #211944Unbelievable indeed
Any responsible parent would be saying to his/her child words along the lines of ‘hasn’t she done well to overcome her disability to get a job on television and well done to the BBC for employing her’
You are right when you say children tend to be more curious than frightened by (non-facial) disfigurement. I grew up with the ‘thalidomide generation’ and there were at least two so afflicted at my school. We children just accepted them as ‘differently normal’, perhaps in a few cases subjecting them to a little unpleasant ridicule (the ‘bully inclination’ inherent in some brats) but certainly no fear.
There but for the grace of god go you and your children Mr & Mrs Angry Parent
February 23, 2009 at 19:24 #211945Seems pretty unbelievable TBH
There’s more chance of Cerrie Burrell getting upset at comments from unwitting children than there is children being frightened of her.
February 23, 2009 at 19:59 #211951Probably a fuss over nothing – one negative comment often creates more outrage, and therefore more issue, than there actually is.
Having a 5yo, I tend to watch far too much CBeebies than is good for me! Our discussion over Cerrie has consisted of my son saying (after Cerrie and Alex had been fronting the segments for about a week) "Oh look, she’s only got one hand. Why?". I said I didn’t know, she might have had an accident, she might just have been born with only one hand. He replied "Why doesn’t she get a new one?"
He asked if lots of people only have one hand, and I told him about one of the girls at my school who I used to go riding with who only had one hand. He was curious to know how she could ride using only one arm (she was much better than me!), but he was certainly not scared or repelled. He’s not mentioned Cerrie’s arm since.Having said that, Cerrie and Alex aren’t good presenters yet – very stiff and self-conscious, horribly scripted and artificial sounding. Bring back Chris and Pui!
February 23, 2009 at 20:17 #211955Send Heather Mills round to their house to sort them out. I can’t see many people sending this complaint.
February 23, 2009 at 21:41 #211972Typical OTT response from people who have nothing better to do.
If a Kids show was hosted by Gary Glitter,Jonathan King and Michael Jackson then id be in a panic.
February 23, 2009 at 22:00 #211975My uncle lost his arm in a farming accident, and he used to pull out the stump when me and my brothers were kids just to gross us out.
To be honest I dont know if it’ll give kids nightmares, but it does seem like a strange job for a one armed person.
I once had to wait 45 minutes to be served in a bar because the barman was a thylidomide, which did annoy me a bit as I believe u should match the person to the job, not just give them a job.
So I’m in two minds about this, from one point, sure it’s a triumph over adversity and would be perfectly suited as a storyline for a bad movie. From another point of view I think its highly unlikely that there werent better suited two-armed applicants who didnt get the job…appears to be the Beeb at their PC brigade usual.
February 23, 2009 at 22:07 #211976I thought they would be complaining because she is too white.
I hope she takes the initiative though and resigns. She could make a few bob out of it, if she plays her cards right.

Concert pianism would be a "strange job" for someone single-handed, as indeed it would a thalidomide-affected pint puller (really?)) but I fail to see how being a children’s TV presenter necessitates all limbs intact.
No idea who the lady is, but presuming no ‘positive discrimination’, and her being good at the task of entertaining weans then more power to her elbow
February 23, 2009 at 23:35 #211985Honestly, a thylidamide bar man…I ask you…

Dont really know what the show actually does but if its anything like kids TV when I was a pup then I would imagine that a few things will surely be written out of the programming schedule or there will be problems such as-
"Well, today kids, we’re going to bake a cake, now you may have to bear with me here, in fact pull up a seat, we may be here for a very long time…"
"Well kids, lets give a big round of applause for the new blue peter dog…you…not me!"
"And today we’ll be witnissing the return of Gordon the Gopher…..Gordon….errr…Gordon……"

I also have a CBeebies obsessed 5YO daughter. I watched Cerrie for about a week and didn’t notice her "disability." Neither did our daughter!
It was only when my partner came in early one night and pointed it out to me (not in front of my daughter) that I became aware. I have no problems at all with employing Cerrie. However, Cerrie and her partner are both very wooden and we want the old presenters back.
Both seem to be undecided whether they should act their roles or be themselves. Hopefully they will improve.
I feel sorry for the children of the parents who have complained.
