The question is all in the Title!
But can PLACE betting ever pay?
Can anyone suggest a suitable system worth folowing for this style of betting.

December 18, 2010 at 10:27 #333078Interesting question

Tried many time without nailing it tbh, you need a very high strike rates to make it work with restricted prices for place bets.
I would suggest it maybe worth looking at race types and number of runners to get an angle on it.
Not for me though

manchester
– different strokes for different folks I guess.
Place betting is something I have never taken too seriously but that should not exclude us from taking a genuine look at it.
You suggest I high strike rate will be required which must inevitably result in low prices.
Perhaps a contrary view may produce better prices!!!

December 18, 2010 at 10:49 #333081Would be good if someone could post if they may have cracked the place market, or even which type of races maybe profitable

As the thread is named even

Think i may have a look at the Massey custom report and see if i can come up with something
December 18, 2010 at 10:58 #333082I’d say YES it can. You need to be quite systematic about it though. Stick to ‘quality’ non h/cap races with only 8-9 runners. Rate all the runners and back your top rated @ whatever price, or take bfsp.
I’ll start a thread today with selections.December 18, 2010 at 11:02 #333084Nice one
That will be interesting will follow with interest, as i have said i have spent many an hour on this project
December 18, 2010 at 11:15 #333086My thinking is PRICE or perhaps some may call it Value is all important.
Now the word PRICE can mean different things to us all and some may see price value at odds on and then others just cannot see it at all.
Today we are left with Southwell and the 2.05 has 8 runners declared and the prices may reflect this and with 3 places on offer Paddy Power is showing 15/8 about
EVERYMANFORHIMSELF which I find quite interesting.Everymanforhimself WON 5/1
and could so easily be the case for NOT – I say NOT staking Place only!

December 18, 2010 at 11:30 #333090Don’t forget that Betfair still pay 3 places even if non runners reduce the field below eight runners.
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I crawled on six crooked highwaysDecember 18, 2010 at 11:53 #333093. . . . and now the field
is
down to 7

has raised a very good point regarding Betfair, the downside to exchanges are they do not
yet
offer "Best Odds Guaranteed" and it is only a gut feeling
as far as I am concerned
but BOG improves my return over BF’s sp’s.

When refering to PLACE only do you mean the PLACE part of ech way bets or the PLACE market on Betfair ?
December 19, 2010 at 00:45 #333185Billion,
It may be a good idea to keep to races that favour each way betting.
There is a mathematical edge for races with a short priced favourite.
Number of runners make a difference.
5, 8 or 9 runners.
12, 13, 16, 17 or 18 runner handicaps.
Also when bookmakers have special offers, paying 5 places etc.
Although punters should look out for potential non-runners, as a 16 runner handicap that turns in to 15 runners gives far less value (paying only 3 places). It may be profitable to keep an eye on the place market on betfair. Backing horses each way with bog bookmakers offering better place (in the place part of each way bets) odds than betfair’s lay price. This will put a certain value aspect in to the system, allowing a better chance of success.
I myself consider backing each way at 5/2 or bigger, if other aspects favour each way betting. It gets back 81.25% of your total stake at 1/4 odds, 75% at 1/5.
A system based on all of the above factors may well make a profit.
Value Is EverythingDecember 19, 2010 at 09:32 #333202When refering to PLACE only do you mean the PLACE part of ech way bets or the PLACE market on Betfair ?
My leaning is towards bookmakers offering odds to Place Only when the prices such as EVERYMANFORHIMSELF at 15/8, although 8 runners is preferred where 3 places can be had and like some will not venture much lower than this.
As an individual I am not keen on the exchanges and leave it to those who worship at the altar of Betfair (nothing wrong with that but just not for me).

December 19, 2010 at 11:12 #333209Did you notice that Everymanforhimself was running at Southwell for the first time?
Mind you, he wasn’t bred in the US of A but his dad Fasliyev was!
May have the foundations of yet another system there.

I’ve been using a separate Betfair account for place betting and the very occasional win bet.
The secret is having the bottle and the money to place sizeable bets that give you a return you feel is worthwhile.
You can start with a small bank but as you are targeting certain races you can easily get bored to tears and start taking silly chances after a day or two.
I think as an addition it’s worth doing but full time it is very time consuming and you need the patience of a saint.
Let’s say your average bet is between 200 and 800 quid.
The problem is you won’t get matched early doors so you have to be there for every race or at least be around to get matched at the best odds.EG Kevin’ Ryans Finns Rainbow, by no means a selection,in the last at Southwell today will be most people idea of the winner of that race today. He was available at 2.20 for a place but only for 19 quid and for probably about 1 minute. Now he’s 1.34 for a place with 3 quid available. Sometime when you were sleeping another 24 quid was matched by more than likley 6 to 10 people.
I haven’t studied the race but it looks a pretty deperate event and he could go off at around 5/4 – 6/4 and say 1.23-1.28 for a place. If that turns out to be the case it would mean if I wanted to average decent odds I’d have to be on the go all day placing bets in dribs and drabs and hope to get matched.
Rewarding for sure but very very hard work IMO.

Fist
even if I do not like the exchanges.
