The racing post website today reports that:
"Richard Hughes will wear a helmet camera for all his mounts on British Champions Day at Ascot on Saturday. Channel 4’s Denise Large said: “The intention is to incorporate the footage within our post-race analysis."
Does anyone know of the camera counts as part of his ‘weight’ or if essentially he will be ‘overweight’ in every race?!
Yes the camera will be very light but in that ground in a close finish it might prove the difference between a win by a nose and a loss by a nose!
October 17, 2013 at 11:40 #455162The jocks weigh out holding all their kit and saddle so I’m sure the weight will be correct.
As one who’s had a modern micro-camera inserted deeply into his urethra on a number of occasions, I can assure you of their relative lack of volume and density.
Too much information?

Very cool, love watching those jockey-helmet cam videos, quite a lot of them on youtube from the States and have been waiting for them to do it in some big races over here for a while now!

A whole new take on the helmet cam
October 17, 2013 at 14:48 #455178The jocks weigh out holding all their kit and saddle ….
not quite all – Rule D42(4):
>>The Rider must put into the scale and include in his weight everything that the horse is to carry in the race, apart from
42.4.1 skull cap,
42.4.2 whip,
…..
42.4.17 number cloth <<http://rules.britishhorseracing.com/Ord … 98&depth=3
don’t they put the skull cap and whip onto the nearby table as they seat themselves on the scale ?
since there’s no mention of cameras or battery packs / transmitters in that 42.4 list of exclusions, and since they are not an integral part of the skull cap, presumably they will be detached from the skull cap to be taken with him onto the scale to be counted in his weight each time and then reattached – or maybe just weighed the once as presumably happens with the safety vest ?

No mention either of bridles or headgear. A lead pipe weighing 7lbs could quite easily be concealed in one side of specially set up sheepskin cheekpieces. A stone overweight . . . I think I feel a plot for the next novel coming on!

Very interesting. Many thanks
October 17, 2013 at 21:45 #455234Waste of time giving it to Hughes he’ll just sit motionless for the entire race before making a burst with 200 metres left……
