For a record € 740,000
I guess Hales and Co. needed him badly after losing Hermes Allen on Saturday.
Good luck with himFebruary 5, 2024 at 16:47 #1680057‘Caldwell Potter’s fee eclipses the previous record for a jumps horse sold at auction in Interconnected, who was bought by Darren Yates at Doncaster in 2019 for £620,000.’
Ran 4 times, never won a race.February 5, 2024 at 17:03 #1680059I know they are all wealthy people but that is a crazy price for a National Hunt horse.
Fil D’Or has gone for something like 600k as well.
February 5, 2024 at 17:09 #1680060Imagine going to Harry Derham, I’m glad he has a good horse and I’m sure he’ll bring out the best in him, he seems a natural horseman.
Firm Footings stays with Elliott, he’s another good one I think and well handicapped. Full brother to Monty’s Star, half to Monalee and been running over 2 miles, I’d say he’s nailed on for the Plate.
Unraced full brother to Chantry House went for only €25k which could be a snip.
February 5, 2024 at 17:13 #1680061The auctioneer was very good. When the bidding for Staffordshire Knot hit a flat spot he coaxed and stoked the buyers along, got them going again and got over €500k for him in the end.
February 5, 2024 at 17:28 #1680063And a nice bit of commission for himself, no doubt.
February 5, 2024 at 17:40 #1680064Pied Piper 550,000
I like the horse but come on
Is the Chelsea football owner is changing sport or somethingBlackbeard to conquer the World
February 5, 2024 at 17:49 #1680066Let’s see…. this means that the likes of Staffordshire Knot, Imagine, Mighty Bandit, Pied Piper and Caldwell Potter would have to win at least a Gold Cup each and stay sound for the next 3-4 years.
Not even Elliott expected that, I guess.
Nowadays owners are
a) complaining about prize-money, but
b) losing touch with reality at an HIT auctionFebruary 5, 2024 at 17:50 #1680067It sounds like Elliot is distraught to lose Caldwell Potter. He must really rate him.
Given he only had one winner at the DRF (a 28/1 chance in a handicap), he can hardly afford to lose his best young horses.
It looks like his best chance of a winner at Cheltenham will be in the Cross Country Chase. A race Mullins is clearly not bothered about.
February 5, 2024 at 17:51 #1680068Total for the sale, 5.29M euros, earning Tattersalls a tidy 264,500 in commission. Not bad for a sale that wouldn’t have been in their budgets for the year.
February 5, 2024 at 18:01 #1680069I did notice he has kept hold of Chemical Energy for 215k. I didn’t think he’d let his latest Grand National plot job go that easily.
February 5, 2024 at 20:22 #1680083Just in case someone’s interested in having a look at the lots offered there.
If it’s that fast on YouTube it must be something big
February 6, 2024 at 03:46 #1680106550k for Pied Piper a lot but if your rich enough you’ve got a good , honest , sound horse that will give the family days out from Cheltenham to Royal Ascot , possibly France for late season staying races so I can see the worth in him .
February 6, 2024 at 15:52 #1680142Dead right Cork – they complain about prizemoney but then spend ridiculous amounts on horses that can never win it back.
Its clearly a hobby they are willing to spend money on for the days out / fun / thrill / exposure.
I guess the knock on effect could be that complaints about prizemoney don’t actually lead to anything – why would the courses / bookies / BHA shift up if the interest is clearly there to buy and race horses for the current money on offer – certainly at the top end.
February 6, 2024 at 16:26 #1680150The prize money argument has always been a red herring. Some tracks like Ludlow and Fakenham put up good prize money but often are rewarded with small fields.
It looks to me as though National Hunt racing is kept going by a handful of multimillionaires who are happy to spend silly money at the sales in the hope they will have a winner at Cheltenham. That is all that interests them. They would still have runners there if Cheltenham cut the prize money by half.
It is crazy money for Caldwell Potter but at least he is still has potential. I thought the strangest one was Fil D’Or. OK, he is only 6 but he has hardly been setting the world alight recently. €600k for him?!
February 7, 2024 at 10:29 #1680224Sort of sums up the current NH scene; ridiculously priced horses, bought by a few select owners…..
In regards to prize money, I wish people would make up their mind; I keep hearing conflicting arguments – “prize money doesn’t matter, they just want a winner” or “British prize money is a joke”.
February 7, 2024 at 12:44 #1680234Bromley loves Martaline as a sire and is adamant that CP is bred to be a Gold Cup horse but you’d have to question that based on the breeding
