2nd time he has lost the Aga Khan job and could be the last judging by the using the best jockey available stance the owner seems to be indicating.
With regards to the incident – I would be interested to know what rule the Stewards followed and what (if any) was the scale of punishment within said rule.
For me I think 3 months would have been around the right spot so him getting 2 months is not something I am up in arms about but I do not see the incident as being as serious as Fallon/Webster (due to clear intent to remove him from his horse even after the race was run) but we must take on board that the French rules may vary to those over here and as such bans may not be on a similar length.
Had Rossa not become unbalanced and unseated I don’t think the stewards would have even looked at the matter (jockeys would have likely expressed some words to each other at the time) and I would imagine that jockeys making room for themselves using their mount to ease a passage out and/or elbows is a more common part of race riding than we think (although probably more towards the end of the race than anytime else).
This for me was an extreme case where horse movement (which exaggerated Christophe intended elbow nudge into a firmer push) coincided exactly with Rossa becoming momentarily unbalanced due to his horse shifting slightly and that may explain some of Rossa’s rather blaise ho hum that’s racing response to the incident….almost as if easing jockeys over with elbows is something that invariably happens in a race and that most jockeys have all done at some point.
I think (although not 100% certain) that that explanation may have been taken into account by the stewards in not giving him more time off to think about it.

Exactly, patriot1.
There is a significant difference between intent to knock someone off a horse and a dangerous act which was reckless about whether or not someone ended up being knocked off their horse.

That was discussed yesterday by Lydia Hislop and Nick Luck on his podcast. If I remember rightly, Luck said in France the punishment for dangerous riding is 20 days and wondered how France Galop had found 60. Presumably there must be something in the rules to justify the length of punishment, otherwise Soumillon could appeal and get it overturned.
October 4, 2022 at 17:48 #1617390This is the translated version of the Saint Cloud stewards report on the race:
After examining the control film and hearing the jockeys Christophe SOUMILLON (SYROS) and Rossa R YAN, the Stewards distanced the colt SYROS from 2nd place considering that by pushing his competitor with his arm and his shoulder, the jockey Christophe SOUMILLON was at the origin of the fall of jockey Rossa RYAN. This behavior is considered voluntary and dangerous. The ranking therefore became as follows: 1st: CONTINUOUS (JPN) 2nd: MAKE ME KING3rd: TIMES BOULEVARD 4th: BEHIND THE SCENES (IRE) For this reason, the Stewards sanctioned the jockey Christophe SOUMILLON with a ban on riding for a period of 60 days. The CONTINUOUS (JPN) and SYROS foals were the subject of a biological sample at the end of the race.|
So it doesn’t help in identifying the specific rule they have used. I take the term’ voluntary’ (the French word was volontaire) to indicate that they believed his action was deliberate rather than accidental and that seems the likeliest reason why they had the option of a 60 days ban.
October 6, 2022 at 19:37 #1617581Surely if they made it a 3 month ban he would have missed all the top races this year and there might have been less angst among the racing fraternity.Iirc he will be back for japan and hong kong top races. As for ryan downplaying it i get he doesnt want to treated like bryony frost was but surely the others jocks can see thats not acceptable. It wasnt just one of those things. Ryans dad certainly didnt think so and let his feelings be known probably because his son didnt feel it was his place. Not a good look for racing yet again and got huge negative publicity everywhere.
Ive had loads of folk who have no interest in horse racing speaking to me about it. Racing certainly seems to damage itself with scary regularity.November 13, 2022 at 13:34 #1622972Itv saying the surete are looking into the incident … Surely this means Rossa has made a complaint …
November 13, 2022 at 13:38 #1622973Wont need a complaint from anyone, the intent was clear… its on video…
November 13, 2022 at 13:47 #1622978Why has it taken so long though ….and at the end of the season
November 13, 2022 at 21:48 #1623069Good point HDLG,im just hoping he receives what he deserves
